Maybe You Are a Purple Person (You Just Don’t Know It Yet)

Purple isn’t just for “purple people” — here’s how to wear it without fear.

There’s a common trope: You’re either a purple person or you’re not. And no — I’m not talking about an actual purple person. I mean someone who grew up with a lavender bedroom, instinctively gravitating towards lilacs and violets like it was second nature. Their pencils had purple erasers. Maybe their prom dress? Plum, obviously.

But here’s the thing: Purple shouldn’t belong only to so-called purple people. Despite its rich history — yes, kings, queens and emperors literally wore it to flex their power — purple has somehow become strangely polarizing. You either embrace it or avoid it like a glittery fashion risk you’re just not brave enough to take.

But why are people so scared of purple?

The Fear Factor

Purple isn’t shy. It doesn’t whisper like beige or blend in like navy. Purple makes an entrance. It announces itself. In a world that often tells us to stay in our lane, that kind of energy can feel… intimidating.

It’s also wildly expressive. Deep purples radiate drama. Soft purples lean into whimsy. Bright purples? Pure joy. And maybe that’s the issue: Purple demands attention. If you’re not used to standing out, it can feel like too much.

Breaking Out of the “Not a Purple Person” Mindset

Here’s the truth: You don’t have to go full grape popsicle to appreciate purple. You don’t even have to repaint your walls lilac. But, purple deserves more than the occasional side-eye. It deserves a second look.

Underneath all that intensity is a color that’s rich, curious and quietly confident.

So, how do you ease into purple without feeling like you’re trying too hard? Start small. A lavender candle. A plum-colored mug. Maybe a pair of violet socks. Let it into your world in tiny ways and notice how it makes you feel. Not loud. Not scary. Just… bold. Maybe even a little fun.

How to Style Purple (When You’re Not Sure It’s “You”)

If you’ve avoided purple because you’re not sure how to wear it, or because you’ve convinced yourself you’re not “that kind of person,” the key is to start subtle and strategic. Don’t dive in. Dip a toe.

1. Find Your Shade.

Not all purples are created equal. For cool undertones, try lavender, periwinkle or icy violet. For warm undertones, reach for plum, wine or deep orchid. Prefer neutrals? Mauve or dusty lilac can feel soft, understated and sophisticated.

2. Use It as an Accent.

Purple doesn’t need to be the main event. Start with accessories — a lilac crossbody bag, amethyst earrings, a violet scrunchie, or even purple nail polish. These little details can make you feel like you’re trying something bold without shouting it.

3. Anchor It With Neutrals.

Still worried it’s “too much”? Pair purple with the basics: beige, gray, white or black. A lavender top with jeans? Easy. A plum scarf over a camel coat? Chic. Purple plays well with neutrals and can elevate your look rather than dominate it.

4. Layer It In.

Still hesitant? Go undercover. A peek of lilac socks. A purple camisole under a blazer. A violet hair clip. You’re not making a statement — you’re starting a conversation.

Purple Is Power

Purple isn’t just for those who’ve always loved it. It’s for anyone ready to step outside their comfort zone — even just a little.

You don’t have to be a “purple person” to wear purple. You just have to stop being afraid of being seen.

Purple isn’t scary. It’s just waiting for you to own it.
