A Girls’ Guide to Navigating Halloween 2022

Because no one needs to see another angel-devil duo…

by LEILA CRIST ★ SEPTEMBER 29, 2022

Now that we’ve had a month to settle into school life, it’s time to start planning for the event of the season: Halloween.

Whether you’re a freshman who’s yet to experience their first college “halloweekend” or a senior who’s a seasoned veteran, getting ahead of Halloween costumes is crucial. No one wants to be stuck scrambling for pieces in their closet to put together a DIY witch costume within hours of the party. Some of my friends have even been scavenging online for costumes since August… trust me, you don’t want to accidentally get behind on planning. Here’s an idea of what’s “in” and “out” for Halloween ‘22.

IN: Elvis and Priscilla

This costume is just perfectly relevant enough for this year’s Halloween, as the Elvis Motion Picture grabbed all of our hearts just a few months ago. While, at first glance, this may just seem like a couple’s costume, there are definitely ways for you and a bestie to perfectly encapsulate the King of Pop and his beloved bride.

Elvis' shirt

Elvis' suit

Elvis' glasses

Elvis' necklace

Elvis' cane

OUT: Euphoria

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Euphoria stan as much as the next person. However, I’d definitely say that this is a costume that’s very “been there, done that” and should be left in 2022. If anything, let’s just wait for Season 3 Maddie/Cassie outfits to recreate!

IN: Black swan & White swan

This costume is the perfect twist on angel and devil (because trust me, we’ve seen enough of that!). I thought this take on it was amazing, but it can even be created just using a little black (and white) dress hanging in your closet! Make sure to top it off with a tiara and some fun swan-like eye makeup :)

Black/white Corset

Black/white Tutu

Black/white Tiara

OUT: Cowboy

No hate to this costume—I’ll admit it was definitely one of my Halloween outfits in the past couple of years. However, I think we’ve exhausted the options of any sort of cowboys for Halloween. I’ve seen variations of space cowboys, Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, and even Jessie, the cowgirl from Toy Story. Trust me, leave the cowboys in the past!

IN: Top Gun

What’s great about this costume is that it’s so versatile. It can be for a group, a duo, or even a couple’s costume! Similar to Elvis, this is another current pop culture reference that’s sure to be a hit this year.

Top Gun

IN: Thing 1 & Thing 2

Thing 1 & Thing 2 is the perfect power duo costume for this year. Though at first glance, it may seem like a childhood costume, the red leather jumpsuit and knee-high boots elevate this look perfectly. Make sure not to leave out the blue hair!

Thing 1 & Thing 2 Jumpsuit

Thing 1 & Thing 2 Boots

Blue Hair Extensions

Thing 1 & Thing 2 Patches

Thing 1 and Thing 2 Belt

OUT: CULTURAL APPROPRIATION

While Hallo SZN is all fun and games, be careful to avoid costumes that are offensive and inappropriate. Cultural appropriation is so out.

DO NOT dress as:

A Native American person/Pocahontas, Ninja, any Disney princess that is a race or ethnicity outside of your own, Gypsy/belly dancer, homeless person, Jesus/Nun/Rabbi, anything with a Bindi, Hijab, or Sombrero, Dora, Hello Kitty, Day of the Dead, any use of a kimono, Egyptian, or Toga.

With these options, it’s clear that there’s so much more out there than just being a Playboy bunny for Halloween… happy shopping!
