Fashion’s Newest Face: Dylan Mulvaney

Day… of being absolutely obsessed with Dylan.

by BELLA TABAK ★ OCTOBER 3, 2022

From being an iconic internet influencer to absolutely slaying New York Fashion Week, Dylan Mulvaney’s bubbly, lovable presence has most likely graced your screen at least once in the past few months. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Dylan Mulvaney solidified her role as a transgender influencer on Tiktok by documenting her daily experiences of newfound girlhood. One pivotal step she took during this time was really defining her own personal style. In Dylan’s, “Day 86 of Girlhood,” she explains how she leans more towards feminine pieces, especially dresses. This can be seen throughout her whole series as she usually plays with very girly, colorful pieces, but also dips into a more simplistic and chic look at other times.

It could be said that Dylan’s daily transitioning videos really marked her entrance into the fashion world. While the point of the series was to document her experience transitioning, it also serves as a lookbook. Dylan took her next steps into the industry in early July when she tested the waters of modeling. She posted her jaw-dropping photos on Instagram while stating, “Y’all really hyped me up to model and now we just need designers who’d want to work with me…”.

Dylan had no problem finding designers to work with, which she displayed very clearly during the recent New York Fashion Week. The influencer shared her, “First Lady” look on Instagram after hosting Kate Spade’s NYFW livestream for their Spring 2023 collection. The new collection gives a modern twist to 1950s and 60s silhouettes, while also playing with very bold colors and patterns. All of the looks also lean very heavily into the feminine design. Dylan was the perfect person for Kate Spade to assign to the collection since her established style goes hand and hand with this aesthetic.

Mulvaney also showed off her natural modeling talent while walking the runway in Jessica Jade (and the video of her went viral on Tiktok). Her walk is professional, and dare I say perfect. It is almost unbelievable that this was her first time walking during fashion week. She ate and left no crumbs in this look, and the dress itself was to die for. The prints, bright colors, and lace-up sides fit Dylan’s established style very well and her performance sold it (I want to buy the dress!).

Dylan clearly has a bright future in the fashion world. She has the ability to be the next it-girl, not to mention how amazing it is that she’s giving trans women an essential form of representation. Adding models of different sizes, gender identities, races, and sexualities to the runway will only benefit us and the fashion industry as a whole. Dylan branching out into the industry reminds me so much of Emma Chamberlain's career shift to fashion icon and model. We are at the start of a time period where social media influencers can escape the mold and initiate real change. Make sure you look out for Dylan at future events, because soon, she’ll be the face of them.
