10 Up-Dos to Beat the Heat This Spring
Because the weather shouldn’t decide if you have a good hair day.
by HANNAH KROHNE ★ MARCH 30, 2022
As the weather gets warmer (kind of), the hair gets frizzier. . . so let’s talk up-dos. These 10 looks will keep your hair off of your neck without compromising your confidence.
#1: The Claw Clip
This is an everyday look that can be dressed up or down. It takes about 30 seconds to master. Simply twist your hair while pulling it up the back of your head and secure the clip at the base of your neck. For a night-out look, slick your hair back into the clip. During the day, leave it loose and relaxed and pull out the front pieces. There are so many different colors and shapes to choose from when it comes to clips, and ones specifically designed to hold longer, thicker hair as well!
#2: Bubble Braid
This is the perfect look to add some spice to any outfit. Start by putting your hair into a ponytail, and then separate one small section at a time and secure it with a clear elastic. Repeat all the way down your ponytail. Then, fluff up each section and you’re good to go! This hairstyle can be rocked anywhere from a grocery store to a music festival. Lifehack: instead of going through the hassle of removing your clear elastics, heat up a curling iron and hold it against each elastic to break it immediately!
#3: The Braided Pony
Not quite sure about the bubble braid? Try braiding your ponytail instead. You probably remember this look from middle school, but it’s time to bring it back in an elevated way. I recommend slicking back the ponytail to give it a sleeker look. You can do so by using a teasing brush or any brush with nylon bristles and hair gel. Search around on Amazon, Target, or really anywhere to find one that works best for your hair type!
#4: The Effortless Low Bun
Don't have lots of time? The low bun has you covered. It takes only a few minutes to style, but it can still be paired with a sophisticated outfit. Loosely pull your hair back from the front of your head towards the nape of your neck. Then secure it into a loose bun using whatever method works for you and pull out pieces of the bun and front to achieve that effortless look. Curl the front pieces to dress it up even more!
#5: The Trucker Hat
One more day until you wash your hair? I got you. Throw your hair into a low bun or pony—don’t worry too much about how it looks. Next, top it off with your favorite trucker hat. My personal favorite trucker hats are from The Mayfair Group and Von Dutch but Amazon has some cheaper options as well. Not only will you look trendy, but you’ll be saving some dry shampoo too!
#6: The 90s Barrette Bun
It may be 2022, but there’s no doubt that the 90s are back. To achieve this hairstyle, first secure your hair into a tight low ponytail, bun, or braid. Next, add barrettes or bobby pins to the front of your hair framing your face. If you want to keep it simple, just place one barrette on each side, but the more the merrier! Purchase colored clips for a spunkier look or stick to the basics for a sophisticated look.
#7: The Retro Pony
This twist on your classic ponytail will leave you feeling so Y2K. Pull your hair back into a high ponytail first, while leaving front pieces out on both sides. Then, loosely clip the front pieces by framing them around your face. Aim to drag the hair down the front of your hairline before bringing it back towards the ponytail once it is behind the ear. You can use a colorful clip to accessorize the look or use a basic bobby pin if you want it to blend in. Side profile perfection.
#8: The Bun-tails
This relaxed look will have you set to look cute while lounging. Put a loose low bun on both sides of your part and pull out the front pieces! In other words, follow the steps for the Effortless Low Bun on each side of your part! This hairstyle can be made edgy or girly depending on the outfit you pair with it. If you have money pieces—lighter hair framing your face—this hairstyle is definitely for you.
#9: The Safety Pin
Who said a household item can’t also be a hair accessory? If you’re looking to branch out for a music festival or another occasion, this look will be sure to turn heads. Gather your hair into a tight ponytail or bun. Gently place as many safety pins as you see fit into your hair, but be careful not to poke yourself! Talk about making a statement.
#10: The Slicked Bun
This is THE hairstyle of 2022. It only feels right to end with it. Slick back your hair using a brush and gel, and get it as smooth and sleek as possible (this is key!). Next, secure it into a bun in the middle of your head using whatever method works best for your hair. It may take extra hair ties to ensure that it holds for as long as you need. Complete the look by channeling your inner Bella Hadid all day long.
