6 Ways to Have Your Very Own Gilmore Girls Fall

Because Rory would want us to.

by NINA CAPANEAR ★ SEPTEMBER 15, 2022

The leaves start changing colors, the air becomes cool and crisp. Starbucks starts selling PSL's, and best of all, it's spooky season. If you truly love fall as much as I do, then you definitely know of Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. They star in a comedy-drama series called Gilmore Girls, which follows a mother and daughter living in Stars Hollow, Connecticut. The show is mainly set during the fall and romanticizes this beautiful season. So today, I will help you tap into your inner Rory and have your very own Gilmore Girls Fall with this list of Gilmore Girls-inspired activities:

The first and most obvious activity is reading

One of the most “fall” l activities I can think of is sitting at a charming cafe or park and reading a captivating romance novel. So, I did the research (so you don’t have to) and collected a list of books mentioned in Gilmore Girls that you can indulge in this fall.

  1. Cujo by Stephen King

  2. Deenie by Judy Blume

  3. Freaky Friday by Mary Rodgers

  4. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

  5. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

  6.  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling

  7. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

  8. The Little Locksmith by Katharine Butler Hathaway

  9. The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen

  10. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

  11. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

  12. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Speaking of cafes, the second activity is trying new coffee shops or diners nearby.

Anyone who has seen Gilmore Girls knows about Luke’s Diner. Try to find a local diner and order the Rory and Lorelai classic: a burger and fries with your coffee. Bonus points if you wear flannel in honor of Luke. If you’re not a fan of burgers and fries, there are yummy alternatives. You can order a cold brew from pretty much any coffee shop. Rory and Lorelai love their hot black coffee, but a cold brew is the way to go if you prefer an iced drink. If you are more in the mood for more of a munch, you can try a coffee donut or muffin-in honor of Rory and Lorelai’s coffee addiction.

The third activity is to have a classic movie night with snacks just like Rory and Lorelai.

Get the living room set up with candy, pizza, and whatever else you enjoy, and have a movie marathon. In case you need inspiration on which movies to watch, I made a list of some of the best fall movies to binge.

1. When Harry met Sally

2. Dead Poets Society

3. St Elmo's Fire

4. Little women

5. Autumn in New York

6. Legally Blonde

7. Jennifer’s Body

8. Edward Scissorhands

9. Halloween

10. Knives Out

11. Hocus Pocus

Additional Fall-tivities

Pumpkin and apple picking—classic autumn activities. Make sure to take lots of pictures and bring home a pumpkin to carve with your friends. In honor of Lane (Rory’s best friend), you could even visit an antique shop or a record store inspired by her love for music. You could also have your own basket auction like in the show. Set up a picnic with friends and bring your baskets filled with goodies.

The last activity is to journal.

Journaling is so fall but is also amazing for your mental health. Write about your favorite memories, your dreams, and your favorite part of your day. You can collect pictures and things throughout the day and stick them in your journal. Then, customize the journal in the spirit of autumn.

BUT, one of the most iconic parts about Gilmore Girls is the Autumn fashion.

Rory and Lorelai have some fabulous fall fits, and I am going to help you replicate their style. Some of Rory’s staple clothing items are chunky cable knit sweaters, turtle necks, skinny bootcut jeans, plaid skirts, button-up long-sleeve shirts, and trench coats. Any fall sweater would work as long as it is chunky and oversized. You also need a pair of black converse (platform is in), some hair clips, black pumps, tights, combat boots, flannels, headphones with a chord, duh, and a cup of coffee in hand at all times. Regarding hair and makeup, Rory has a very natural look. To replicate it as close as possible, you should blow dry your hair and ensure it is smooth but still has volume. For makeup, all you need is some blush, mascara, and maybe some lip gloss. To finish it all off, head to bath and body works and get some fall-scented body mists.

Happy start of fall! XOXO, UGirl.
