A Guide to Being Your Own Valentine
This year, let’s make Valentine’s Day all about self-love.

Valentine’s Day: the holiday of flowers, chocolate, and romance. Others call it Single People’s Awareness Day. I’ve been single for 20 years and counting, but that doesn’t stop me from celebrating. My fellow single friends look at me like I’m crazy when I say this, but there are plenty of ways to be your own valentine! Here are some fun things that you can do for yourself on February 14th, because self-love is SO important!
#1: Take yourself out to dinner.
You don’t need a boyfriend to buy you dinner! There’s no shame in sitting at a restaurant alone, so own your singleness and treat yourself! Some of my favorite places in Syracuse are Francesca’s, Oh My Darling, and Apizza (sorry, Pastabilities is overrated). Go all out and order all your favorite things, maybe even a bottle of wine if you’re feeling it.
#2: Watch your favorite movie and eat some Valentine-themed snacks.
Watch a cheesy rom-com on Netflix (I love To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) and eat some chocolate while wearing a comfy pajama set. Staying in by yourself is sometimes the best thing you can do. My favorite V-Day-themed chocolates are the Dove milk chocolate hearts. I’m not even ashamed to admit I ate an entire heart-shaped box in one sitting last year. So put on some fuzzy socks and cozy up to a cheesy movie tonight. Nights with yourself are so important for mental health!
#3: Wear an outfit you feel your best in.
Put on an outfit that makes you feel like a bad bitch and rock it throughout the day. Confidence is key! When you radiate bad bitch energy in a hot outfit, people will notice. When you look good, you feel good.
#4: Treat yourself to an item you’ve been wanting forever.
You don’t need a boyfriend to buy you a gift - you can do it yourself! No one knows what you want better than yourself. A boyfriend will probably buy you something you didn’t even need or want anyway. Save up your money and buy yourself that cute purse you’ve been eyeing for a while. It’ll make you excited and feel great!
#5: Write yourself a love letter.
I know it sounds cheesy, but journaling and writing things down that you love about yourself is so therapeutic. We focus on the negativities and our insecurities way too often. Take a second to think about what you love about yourself, and write it down in a journal. Whenever you’re feeling sad or insecure, look back on it and remember all the amazing qualities you have that you love about yourself.
This year on Valentine’s Day, prioritize yourself. In fact, make it an everyday thing. Even if you have a boyfriend, these habits are still SO important! Love yourself first! XOXO <3
