How to Have a Stress-Free Move-Out

Summer, here we come.

by GEORGIA KOGUT ★ APRIL 27, 2023

We finally made it! For first-year students, congrats on such a huge achievement. After the long Syracuse semester, you deserve some sunshine and a nice break. But before you sit back and relax, you have to tackle moving out. Whether you have a parent or your whole family helping you move out, it can be chaos. But no need to fear. Here are some tips to get you through move out day.

Prepare ahead of time

If you are finishing finals or you are one of the lucky ones that skips the dreadful exams, you are still sure to be preoccupied with work. I am a master procrastinator and leave stressful tasks to the very last minute, so don’t be me. Start packing some smaller items and things you don’t use on the regular. This will make packing a lot less daunting in the end.

Make a plan & coordinate

Are you driving or flying; what time are you heading out; what storage space do you have? These are all questions you definitely shouldn’t leave until the last minute. Talk with parents and those helping you move to check off everything on your list. Even better, actually make a list so you can stay on top of things.

Dress to destress

Leave out a few outfits in your final packing. Syracuse weather is unpredictable so choose a versatile comfy outfit. Wear what will make you feel your best. If you are a style icon 24/7 and keep your accessories to the max, you go for it. Or if you are a sporty core, sneaks and a t-shirt kind of person, go for that vibe too. Whatever you choose, make sure you feel confident, cool, and comfy.

Put on your favorite playlist

Your niche might be 70’s Rock or Soft Indie. Whatever it is, make sure it gets your energy going and lifts your mood. Personally, I am a big fan of 2000’s Pop to get the party going and cheer me up. Embrace your inner rockstar, and make packing a bit more fun :)

Get cleaning supplies

Some dorm rooms are in Mr. Clean’s nightmares.. Even the people that keep their space spotless will be shocked at the dirt and dust you dig up moving furniture around. Swiffers, Clorox wipes, and extra trash bags will be your best friends. For most students, you won’t be coming back to your room in the fall so make sure you remember all of your stuff. Don’t leave behind that favorite scrunchie! Remember the golden rule: leave it how you found it (or better).

Breathe

Moving back out can be a lot. An entire year’s worth of stuff needs to be packed and moved. But it’s going to be okay, I promise! Remember to take care of yourself first and worry about everything else later. Soak in the moment, it’s been a tough year but you made it through like a boss! Relax and enjoy the rare Syracuse sunshine.
