The ’90s Are Back (But Better)

Fashion's favorite decade has finally made its way back. Walk across campus and you’ll spot it everywhere: baggy denim, leather shoulder bags and tiny sunglasses. What’s the difference this time around? Gen Z is mixing the nostalgic pieces with sustainability and confidence.

Why Gen Z Loves Vintage

The revival of the nineties style isn’t only about how it looks; it's more about the meaning that comes with it. Gen Z has grown up in a fast fashion era, but many college students are now rejecting the cycle of overconsumption in favor of thrifting and reusing.

Thrift stores like 3fifteen and Plato’s Closet have become the holy grail for Syracuse students looking for the perfect pair of vintage jeans or a minimalistic handbag that could’ve been seen in a Friends episode.

The Campus Core Aesthetic

Call it campus core: a perfect combination of vintage simplicity and collegiate prep that feels effortless yet intentional. Start thinking whites, button-ups, loafers, flats, gold hoops; All practical yet chic.

This trend goes far beyond just “fashion,” however, it’s a form of connection. Students are finding comfort and identity through the same pieces that shaped their parents’ youth.

Fashion With a Message

At its core, this throwback trend elected something deeper than simply a love for vintage. It’s about redefining what cool means and embracing imperfection while valuing quality over quantity.

The nineties might be back, but it will never become a carbon copy. In today’s world, we see how this trend reflects how Gen Z combines the past and present with a sense of purpose.

Because in today’s world of micro trends, fast fashion and endless TikTok hauls, maybe the real flex is dressing like your mom and doing it better.
