The 70s are Back… In More Ways than One
70s trends are making their way to the runway.

Seventies trends have been re-emerging since early 2023 with the help of the hit show “Daisy Jones & The Six,” along with the media’s obsession with songs such as “Silver Springs” by Fleetwood Mac. It’s clear that these trends aren’t going anywhere just yet. After NYFW, multiple brands have been taking inspiration from the trends that defined the seventies. Whether it’s bright colors and patterns, familiar silhouettes or flowy garments and dresses, trends from the seventies were seen across the runways on brands such as Versace, Chloé and Bottega Veneta.
The seventies were filled with eccentric and carefree styles, which drastically contrasted the political culture. People coped with the stress of the times by expressing themselves through creative outlets, one of which being fashion. Our world today is filled with uncertainty, similar to the seventies. Just as it was done back then, people are now finding innovative ways to cope. Today, we are seeing designers release eccentric seventies-esque pieces to break the rules of fashion. This shift can be seen on campus within individuals, as the clean girl aesthetic fizzles out and more people begin to take risks with their fashion sense.
The trends that are reemerging can be easy additions to your wardrobe. It might seem daunting to take the trends developing on the runways and implement them into your own style — but don’t worry— we are here to help. The denim on the latest runways is an easy route to take if you are looking to add a taste of the seventies into your look. Finding jeans that have a slight flare, or pairing straight-leg jeans with a denim jacket for a Canadian tuxedo moment, are great for styling denim in a seventies way.
The many vests and jackets that were seen on runways this season are another outlet to capture the seventies aesthetic. Versace’s runway is a great example of how to style a biker jacket or leather vest to achieve the seventies’ aura. Experimenting with the layering of these pieces is perfect for the fall weather and will help you play into the current trends. Another way to implement this aesthetic is to have fun with textures, silhouettes, patterns and colors. Chloé tapped into this in their most recent runway collection, proving that a flowy floral skirt or dress is the perfect way to capture the carefree essence of the seventies. These trends are playful and leave a lot of room for your own discretion and creativity.
It’s inspiring to remember that when you are picking out outfits that fall into the reimagined seventies trends, you’re participating in something so much bigger; fashion can show us a lot about the current societal trends. So, throw on your best patterns, ruffles, and maybe some go-go boots, that would make Cher and all of the fashion icons of the seventies proud!
