After 10 years with the Italian fashion warehouse, American designer Jeremy Scott is stepping down as creative director. On March 21st, the designer published a statement saying that “These past 10 years at Moschino have been a wonderful celebration of creativity and imagination. I am so proud of the legacy I am leaving behind. I would like to thank Massimo Ferretti for the honour of leading this iconic house. I would also like to thank all my fans around the world who celebrated me, my collections, and my vision, for without you none of this would be possible.” He hinted at the fact that Moschino was keeping him busy. In an interview he said, “I want to be sure I have a nice life—I mean, quality time with people.”

Scott has been the creative director since October 2013. In 2014, Scott showcased his first collection for the cheeky Franco Moschino-founded label. He had a different vision than most designers. This collection mixed McDonal’s logos, cow prints, and Spongebob Squarepants. His rare designs attracted pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Lizzo, and Cardi B. Another iconic moment in his career was when he dressed Katy Perry as a chandelier for the Met Gala themed: “Notes on Camp'' in 2019.

Scott never failed to produce rare and different collections. In 2017, he presented a capsule collection released for spring 2017 called “Just Say MoschiNo,” which was pill-themed. While some were very impressed by the collection, others took offense to the bags shaped like prescription pill bottles, given the opioid crisis sweeping the nation. This goes to show that although his unique ideas were appreciated by the majority, some of the ideas were “taken too far,” causing Scott to receive some backlash. However, the majority of the time, Scott received nothing but positive feedback about his work.

The chairman of Aeffe, Massimo Feretti, commented on Scott’s departure from the company and said: “I am fortunate to have had the opportunity of working with the creative force that is Jeremy Scott. I would like to thank him for his ten years of commitment to Franco Moschino’s legacy house and for ushering in a distinct and joyful vision that will forever be a part of Moschino history.”

Even though I have never been a fan of Moschino, considering some of their designs are “too much” for me, it’s been so cool watching Scott creatively present his ideas. I think it’s fair to say that there’s no designer quite like him. It will be interesting to see which direction the next designer will take the company. For now, we honor and appreciate the work of Jeremy Scott.
