Every Lipstick in Every Shade

Olivia’s style transformation from SOUR to GUTS.

by LISA WOLKERS ★ NOVEMBER 29, 2023

During Olivia’s SOUR era, she was known for wearing a lot of Disney kid coded outfits, that could even be described as costumes. Now that she has released her sophomore album GUTS, her looks are noticeably changing (and for the better!).

Olivia calls her new album SOUR’s older sister and her fashion choices are mirroring this new era in her life. She currently wears more simple, minimalistic and mature pieces in comparison to two years ago, yet her fits are still edgy. They are definitely giving late 90s and early 00s grunge vibes.

During an interview with the TODAY Show, Olivia describes herself as grungy. She explains that she loves rock and roll aesthetics, but also enjoys dressing a little feminine. ‘I’m kind of all over the place,’ she says. And we have noticed this change in her outfits since this summer.

This change in style has everything to do with Olivia’s change in stylists. During her SOUR era, she was styled by creative duo Chloe and Chenelle, who also work together with Addison Rae, Ice Spice and the Kardashians. Now, Olivia works with Danielle Goldberg, who is known for dressing Katy Perry and the Olsen twins. Goldberg had helped Olivia by setting her on the map as an upcoming fashion it girl. Her new looks have gotten a lot of media attention, even though they are a natural progression within her style. Olivia is certainly still known for wearing mini tennis skirts and plaid print, but wears styling with a more mature look. She is clearly trying to outgrow her Disney kid era without looking older than her age, which unfortunately happened multiple times during SOUR.

A few months ago, Olivia put herself on the fashion it girl map by wearing multiple iconic outfits; a few of which are Betsey Johnson’s designs. However, her most notable moment was seen on her Instagram on September 10th. During one of her parties, we can see her wearing two pieces from Todd Oldham’s spring 1995 collection, and not just any pieces. She is wearing a combination of Shalom Harlow and Amber Valleta’s outfits from the iconic catwalk, where Harlow overtakes Valetta. This historical moment has recently gone viral on social media. As it turns out, Olivia’s other stylist Jared Ellner got Tedd Oldham himself to loan the pieces to Olivia.

We are very happy to see Olivia Rodrigo develop a style that matches the young woman that she has become over the years. Besides that, we love seeing her develop into the fashion it girl and a style icon of our generation. She is an example to many and might even become as influential as girls like Matilda Djerf and the Jenner girls. We love you Olivia!
