Sweatshirt Style
…because the 315 climate simply requires a good sweatshirt rotation.

The air is already feeling brisk, and we all know that the Syracuse winter is on its way. That being said, it’s time to start looking for some cozy, practical cold-weather layers. Let’s face it: it’s time to expand beyond your beloved Madhappy hoodie.
Let’s first take a look at some basics that can become your Winter staples. Some brands we’re loving right now for the classic, simple sweat set look are Pangaia, Talentless (Scott Disick, you’re my muse), and Daily Paper; you also can’t go wrong with any Alo, Aritzia, or Lululemon loungewear. Sporting any of these will help you to achieve that “clean girl,” put-together look, even while you’re deathly hungover and scarfing down a CoreLife bowl.
If you are looking for a bit more detail and creativity in your sets without it being overwhelming, we suggest you check out Boys Lie, Local Love Club, and T by Alexander Wang. These simplistic sets are great because of their versatility; you can wear both pieces together, or apart. Throwing on a crop top or a baby tee with the sweatpants gives you a cute outfit that enhances your figure; pairing the sweatshirt with a cool pair of cargo pants evokes a cool city-girl vibe.
A good sweatshirt can also become a statement piece. Some up-and-coming streetwear brands such as Sinja Hamilton, Renowned.LA, Hangover Hoodies, and Saturdays NYC have super cool, unconventional styles—we’re talking funky graphics, pops of color, and grungy designs.
There are also some larger, more well-known brands that are a sure-fire win in the sweatshirt search. Mayfair Group and Stussy have some dope graphics on their site. We also LOVE Lonely Ghost Co. and, honestly, founder Indy Blue’s entire aesthetic. All are easy to throw on but sure to earn you compliments. Paired with over-the-ear headphones, a slicked-back bun, and some chains, you’ll look like you stepped off the streets of Brooklyn or Toronto rather than Euclid.
If you want to take a more preppy route, there are plenty of options. Marant, Rowing Blazers, Polo Ralph Lauren, J. Crew (trust us, the whole brand has been revamped in the past couple of months), and Free People all introduce a new era of “preppiness” in loungewear without the Lilly Pulitzer patterns and Vineyard Vines Shep Shirts. By pairing any of these brands with light wash jeans or tasteful cargo pants, stacked bracelets, and some little hoops, your lounge look will scream “old money.”
You can also dress up these sweatshirts and crewnecks by wearing a collared polo underneath and cuffing your sleeves. Though the preppier ones fall on the more expensive side, good quality is promised. And anything from these brands will last you—maybe even until your Hamptons/Nantucket/Coastal grandmother years. Another super practical aspect of these sweatshirts is that they are not seasonal; you can throw one on after a long day at the beach or when you’re heading to class in a nor’easter.
No matter what style you identify with, you can definitely up your loungewear game. And despite your grandmother’s claims, sweatpants and sweatshirts aren’t always frumpy. In fact, they can be quite the opposite if you know where to shop.
Stay warm, UGirl readers, and happy shopping :)
