Trends We're *SO* Over

TikTok’s New Favorite Word, ‘Cheugy’, Belongs In Your Vocabulary…

by JULIA SHORT ★ JULY 6, 2021

If you’ve been active on social media the last few weeks, the new word to rise from the ashes has been the word “cheugy.” Most commonly explained as something that is “outdated” or “not trendy”, cheugy has been a cult favorite to explain trends and clothing pieces that are going out of style.

Not only can this one-of-a-kind word be used to explain fashion trends and items, it is also used to describe actions, social media trends, and overused Instagram captions. “Cheugy” has since evolved into a universal term.

With that being said, the following aren’t cheugy items, rather trends that just need to go…

FILA Disruptor 2 Sneakers

After their rise in 2016 fashion trends, the now cruelly named “FILA Dinostompers'' need to be exiled. Their zigzag pattern combined with the chunkiness of the sneaker itself isn't a fashion staple, it just makes your feet look unnecessarily large for no reason. While I have never been an owner of these incredibly controversial sneakers, I have many friends who have found a way to rock them in 2017. However, let's keep them there.

Chokers

As a staple of 2013-2016 fashion, the choker became a cultural reset. Young girls all over the nation were rocking the classic Brandy Melville stringy black choker; which in time, became a personality trait. When she wore this with a band tee, she was not like the other girls. All in all, it was a cute, fun trend. Instead of reaching for your 5-year-old choker when going out, maybe swap it out for a layered look or a chunky necklace.

UGGs

Now this one may be a bit controversial. Although I may be guilty of wearing my UGG slippers almost everywhere when it gets cold, The classic boot may need to say its goodbyes. After many years of keeping feet comfortable whenever and wherever, the cult favorite has become a bit outdated. Don’t get me wrong, the UGG brand has many essential pieces and accessories (especially if you spend a lot of time in the cold), but the classic boot may need an exit in 2021. Bonus points if you used to fold over your uggs to expose the fur inside.

Anything Chevron Patterned

The hold that this pattern had on society during 2013-2015 is crazy. Chevron was used for almost everything during the “Tumblr Girl Aesthetic” period of almost every teenage girl's life. As a staple during this period of time, this pattern could be seen on almost ANYTHING. Bedding, phone cases, wallpaper...you name it. Chevron has always managed to find a way back into society, but IMO, it should've been done in 2015 and it sure as hell should be done now.

Really Ripped Jeans

Let's be honest, we all had a pair of really REALLY ripped jeans in middle or high school. Although those may have been the fan favorite back in 2016, they are definitely no longer in style. Like, you’re not getting ready to take a singular sip of warm beer in a suburban basement after your high school cast party, and that’s okay. As I have watched the jean style evolve, I have seen less rips and a movement towards more subtle ripped jeans. This isn’t to say that ripped jeans are TOTALLY out, this is just an intervention for those who show their whole leg when wearing jeans.

Triangl Bathing Suits

If you take anything away from this article, it is that Triangl bathing suits *scream* “please leave me in 2016.” Every girl and their mother owned a $100 bathing suit from this company. From the neoprene funky patchwork colors to the solid-colored bikinis, these bathing suits truly had everyone handing over their money. Next time you go to the beach, respectfully, you’re better off getting a trendier and higher quality bathing suit from Target.

Trends come and go. And some of them come back in the future. If you look at current fashion trends, a lot of the style is taken from 90s icons. Although some of these may be hot takes, everyone has their own sense of personal style. If you’re rocking the dino-stompers with a really cute outfit, I’ll respect it. As much as I loved (or hated) these trends at the moment, it is time they make their collective exit.
