Being trendy AND spreading awareness? Count us IN.

It’s almost impossible to avoid the cute, trendy shoppable posts while scrolling through social media lately. But did you know that some of these brands do way more than promote what to wear? Some brands actually spread a positive message and even donate proceeds to their cause of choice. Who knew buying from popular brands could in turn spread awareness?! A few have even taken the extra step to open online-forums for users to create a judge-free community for anyone who wants to be able to talk about anything related to mental health. Here are some brands that we love, that are doing just that:
Madhappy
Madhappy is one of many brands spreading mental health awareness through fashion. Their iconic “Local Optimist” sweatshirt that is all over social media at the moment is one way they are trying to spread an optimistic message. The brand is all about bringing up more positive conversations about mental health simply by just wearing one of their items of clothing. They have partnered with charities such as the JED Foundation, Happy Not Perfect, among others. They also have launched their own mental health resource called The Local Optimist. The website they have created is available to anyone who wants to understand more about the topic of mental health. They even offer support for anyone looking to find help with any particular issue. Let’s face it; life isn’t always perfect! There may be some bumps in the road at times, and it’s important to know that you have support and can use this resource at any time. The next time you notice someone wearing Madhappy, try opening up a positive conversation on mental health. The more positive conversations, the less of a stigma there will be.
The Mayfair Group
The Mayfair Group is another popular brand that is working to destigmatize mental health related issues. They have even partnered with organizations such as The Mental Health Coalition and Active Minds. They are known to sell boldly printed sweatshirts and sweatpants that are meant to help normalize the topic. You may have seen Cara Delevigne wearing the “Say Less Mean More” sweatshirt or even Millie Bobby Brown wearing the pink “Choose Your Own Emotional Adventure” sweatshirt on Instagram. The brand uses their social media platforms such as Instagram and Tik Tok to help further their message by posting various resources, positive and meaningful quotes, and daily affirmations to create a positive mindset for users. Their #MayfairWorld is all about self expression in any way that makes you feel confident and empowered. Their brand encourages us to defy “the norm.”
Happiness Project
The Happiness Project’s main goal is quite straight-forward: to spread more happiness. We LOVE that. The brand supports mental health research by selling basic, logo-embossed clothing pieces. With every purchase, 15% of profits are donated to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention whose mission is to “save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.” This is another brand trying to increase the amount of conversations on mental health in hopes that more people will feel comfortable finding help if they need it. They strive to show the world that it’s okay to not be okay and that everyone should do what makes them happy.
The Local Love Club
he Local Love Club is a leisurewear brand with the message of being kind to yourself and others. The brand focuses on providing help and support to those affected by bullying. A generous portion of proceeds is donated to the Kind Campaign, a non-profit organization that brings awareness and healing to those bullied in school. When you first click on their website it reads, “Welcome to the Local Love Club. Everyone’s Invited.” Even Justin Bieber was seen supporting the brand by wearing their “Lover’s Uniform Hoodie” and “Lover’s Uniform Sweatpants.” They are all about making kindness ~cool~ and coming up with designs that emphasize compassion, kindness, and positivity. This female-founded brand works to help us let go of judgement and to lift eachother up.
Next time you’re impulsively shopping on Insta, take it one step further and try to find the impact the brand is striving to make. Chances are, they’re a lot more than a trendy sweatshirt to wear to your 8a.m.; they will open up and normalize conversations about mental health and positivity.
