The relationships that matter the most in your life aren’t the ones that just scratch the surface or are more for social gain.. It’s often quieter, and taken advantage of by us as individuals.

It’s the relationship you have with yourself.

It’s shown by how you treat yourself. Speaking to yourself differently and constantly criticizing your actions is part of how you treat yourself. A best friend that is with you every second of the day. Yourself. Humans often ignore our needs and seek validation from the outside world, without realising that true validation comes from self love and becoming your own best friend.

Throughout life we are taught how to be a good friend. Of course it is extremely important to be there for your loved ones, but what about yourself? In life it is equally as crucial that we are there for ourselves. As girls, we often don’t show ourselves the kindness that we so freely show to others. If you can leave your important things behind at the drop of a hat to be there for a dear friend, then you can and must do the same for yourself.

Seeking comfort in yourself is the most powerful thing a person can do. Others may come and go, but you'll stay with yourself forever. If you are patient, supportive and kind to yourself, life feels good and positive. Whereas if you are harsh on yourself it feels like the world is sinking. This being said, do not take this as a “I don’t need friends or others.” At the end of the day we all need good friends, but for starters we need a foundation. A foundation that will never break. That base is you.

We need to learn to trust ourselves and treat ourselves with the same kindness and care we show to others. Most importantly, we need to be confident in who we are. Once we become our own best friend we can stop seeking constant approval from others. We can stop being dependent on others. We can start to appreciate and celebrate our life more. Remember, at the end of the day you are the person behind every success and every failure.

To all the women out there, no matter what stage of life you’re in, it’s never too late to strengthen the relationship that matters the most. Whether it means going on solo dates or showing yourself empathy. It all counts towards nurturing the most special bond ever.

And it starts by choosing to stay on your own side even on your worst days.
