Schedules are piling up and finals are looming… It’s easy to get bogged down in a mid-semester slump, and un-slumping yourself is not easily done. But adding these quick confidence boosting tips into your day will help you power through.
Jam out to a “Slaylist” on your class commute
You know those songs that make you feel like you can take on the world? Crank it up on your commute to class for a quick pick-me-up.
When people listen to high-power, high-bass music it evokes a sense of power unconsciously in them, according to the journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science.

Straighten up
Standing or sitting up straight will naturally keep your self-esteem and mood lifted. Students who sat in an upright, confident posture rated themselves more highly than students in a slouched position, according to a new study of psychology at Ohio State University.
Tall and open posture also makes you seem more attractive and powerful to others, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy last year.
A simple, yet effective way to good posture is visualizing good posture. Imagine your neck as a swan’s neck: long and beautiful. Relax your shoulders and raise your chin. Yes, you are a swan.
Replace toxic thoughts with good vibes.
Stop being your worst critic and be your own best friend. If your best friend told you, ‘OMG you look terrible’ or ‘Your brows look sucky today,’ would that help you take on your day? No.
Have your own back by killing any negative thoughts in your head on the spot. Make your mind a positive space for yourself to minimize stress and get more done. After zapping a negative thought, strengthen your positive energy by using an affirmation; science says speaking positively to yourself raises the level of feel-good hormones in your brain.
Pick an affirmation that makes you feel like you could roundhouse-kick a block of wood at that very moment. The more you say it, the more positive energy will come your way.
Start with one of these:
- I am strong and confident. No one can stop me.
- I will make it happen.
- I am powerful. I am loved and surrounded by miracles.
- I love and accept myself unconditionally.
- I am never alone. The universe supports me and is with me at every step.
Get back on fleek
Go ahead and laugh at a meme. Have no shame! Laughing at memes can be productive.
In between classes or work breaks, have a couple go-to memes or videos that will automatically make you laugh. Laughing is therapeutic and will instantly elevate your mood. Just make sure you limit yourself to looking at one or two and then getting back to what you’re doing; going on an Instagram scrolling spree can be distracting and slow your day’s momentum.
Now that you have some tips in your back pocket, go forth and strut out of that mid-semester slump!
