How To Get Out of A Funk

Reading this is the first step.

So you’re in a funk: the endless cycle of feeling unmotivated, then getting angry with yourself for feeling unmotivated, which only makes you more unmotivated. Count how many times I say unmotivated.

Whether you are dealing with a recent breakup, are flooded with homework, or are simply just overwhelmed with life, it’s okay to get into a funk. The feeling is the worst, but don’t be too hard on yourself. It happens to everyone. Avoid comparing your worst day to someone else’s best day.

So what’s the first step to getting back on track? Acknowledging the problem. Are you sleeping too late, procrastinating too often, or skipping out on your self-care? Or, maybe it’s all of the above. Whatever it may be, identify exactly what you are (or are not) doing that makes you feel unlike yourself.

Next, it’s time to bring out the planner. Getting productive again doesn’t just happen, it must be done with intention. Carve out time specifically for the activities that you feel you’re lacking. For example, maybe you'll wake up at 9:30 and do that skincare routine you’ve been skipping out on, followed by the gym at 10 and the library at 12:30. Write all of this down as a checklist—it’ll be satisfying to cross every item off one by one!

If you write something down in your planner, stick to it! That being said, make sure your game plan is realistic—don’t schedule a workout at the same time you are supposed to be in class. You owe it to yourself to be loyal to your own goals, so plan them wisely.

At this point, you should already be feeling better about conquering your funk. It’s all about being intentional. But how can you make the process more exciting than just writing down a to-do list? Give yourself incentives. Maybe on that walk from the gym to the library, you grab Starbucks, or maybe at the end of your night, you treat yourself to a face mask. It's the little things.

If you need to give yourself that final push towards motivation, remind yourself why you’re making changes. If you no longer want to feel a certain way, you must try something different! The most permanent person in your life is yourself, so take care of yourself! Instead of focusing on why or how you got into a low place, focus on showing yourself self-love by getting out of it.

Most importantly, give yourself grace. Allow yourself to ease into being productive again, it won’t happen in a day. Make sure to still let yourself rest and relax when it feels healthy to do so. Reassure yourself that getting into an occasional funk is normal and inevitable.

And finally, remind yourself that the first step is the hardest. You have to start somewhere, and here at UGirl, we’re glad you chose to start here!
