Back to School Blues & How to Beat Them

My anxiety rn…

by JOLIE ZENNA ★ AUGUST 22, 2021

As summer comes to an end, a new school year can bring up a multitude of emotions. Of course, the end of the summer is always bittersweet, but it’s time to wake up and smell the Ernie Davis chicken nuggets--school work, a stressful social calendar, and cold weather lie ahead. If you’re feeling anxious about being back up at school, don’t worry--we’ve all been there.

When feeling anxious about what’s to come this year, take a sec to remind yourself of everything you were able to accomplish last year. It’s safe to say that if you survived last school year, you can survive pretty much anything at this point. And with Syracuse being 96% vaccinated (iconic of us), we’re looking at a more normal fall semester.

Some of the best parts of summer are less work and responsibility, so when the sun starts to set before 8p.m., the pressure is suddenly on again. I know. I know. As amazing as a chill summer day is, it’s healthy to get back into a routine. You have study dates, class crushes, and sweater weather to look forward to!

As the school year approaches, anxiety and nerves also come with some Summertime Sadness. Whether you went on a trip, made new friends, or had a summer job, it can be hard to say goodbye to the last three months and be thrown right back into the Monday-Friday grind. Take your Summer I Turned Pretty style growth into this school year and use it to start off school stronger than ever.

Anticipating balancing your classes, clubs, and social schedule can be daunting. A good way to prepare for this is to plan out a schedule for yourself before classes even start--prepare ahead of time so you’re not as stressed in the moment. Building your time management skills will ensure that you have time for your friends and all of the fun activities you enjoyed over the summer while still maintaining that GPA that I just know you’re capable of.

Opportunities are endless this school year. You have so much to look forward to this fall. What was that cheugy Tumblr thing we were all saying in 2014? The tans may fade but the memories last forever?
