What to Watch on Netflix this October

Netflix and chill... but make it spooky.

by KARLY HOPPER ★ OCTOBER 19, 2020

With pumpkin spice lattes back at Starbucks, spooky season is officially here! Just like most things, Halloween is going to be different this year—we can’t walk back to our dorms at 2:00 a.m. dressed as space cowgirls, or whatever other last-minute costume we pulled together. However, another way we can get in the spirit is by binge-watching Halloween movies on Netflix! So grab some apple cider and your family-sized bag of candies, and get ready for the spookiest movie marathon ever!

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

This horror movie directed by Tim Burton is a classic and takes a spin on the legend of the Headless Horseman. Murders have overwhelmed the small town of Sleepy Hollow, leading many to fear he’s returned! With the perfect mixture of horror, romance, fantasy, and humor, Sleepy Hollow is the perfect movie to start with to get you in the Halloween mood. Johnny Depp is also the main character of the movie... so what else do you need to convince you to watch this? Fun fact: There is a Sleepy Hollow village located here in New York!

Poltergeist (1982)

If you’re looking for a supernatural horror film, Poltergeist is the perfect movie for you. When a family is visited by ghosts who communicate with and abduct their youngest daughter, they must try to return her to the real world. With the famous “They’re here” line, this chilling film will have you wanting an exorcist on speed dial and your LED lights on all night.

Insidious (2010)

This movie screams scary! The first installment in the franchise, Insidious will terrify you in the best way. When a young boy mysteriously falls into a coma after an incident in the attic, a family searches for help and discovers paranormal events taking place in their house. Often compared to Poltergeist, the film transports you into their journey of bringing their son back to reality, all while facing sinister spirits. With the perfect mix of tension, mystery, and jump scares, if you’re looking for a terrifying thriller, Insidious is the one for you this Halloween season. Try not to drop your candy corn!

The Addams Family (1991)

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky… it’s The Addams Family. With a theme song that you can’t help but sing along to, The Addams Family is the perfect movie to get in the spooky season mood. The film follows the bizarre and comedic Addams family as they try to discover if their long lost Uncle Fester is a fraud trying to trick the family out of their wealth. The Addams Family House is also based on our very own Hall of Languages so that gives this movie the perfect ‘Cuse twist! If scary movies aren’t for you, The Addams Family is the perfect choice for this October!

The Witches (1990)

Based on Roald Dahl’s novel, The Witches was the movie that brought me nightmares as a kid. Nowadays though, it’s a nostalgic classic perfect for fall. The film follows children-hating witches in England who disguise themselves as ordinary people to turn kids into mice. Although this may scare your little sister, The Witches is the perfect film to remind yourself of your childhood. Plus, you get to see some crazy 90s witch makeup!

The Evil Dead (1981)

If you’re looking for a true horror film classic, The Evil Dead is perfect for you this October. When friends go camping and find an old book, chaos breaks out. Demonic possessions, evil spirits, and the fight for survival: what more can you ask for in a Halloween movie? Be aware that the movie is extremely gory and violent so if that isn’t your thing, I recommend sitting this one out. Overall, this film creates the perfect atmosphere if you’re in the mood for a thriller.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter

Although this is not a classic Halloween movie, it’s definitely unsettling and worthy of being added to the list. When two girls' parents forget to pick them up from boarding school for winter break, they are left to face evil spirits. Rather than jump scares, this movie gives you the chills because of how vulnerable the girls are. This film will definitely be a good reminder to book your tickets home for break ASAP.
