Ryan Gosling has graced our screens again, but this time it’s not as a Barbie doll; it's as humanity’s last hope.

“Project Hail Mary” is the latest sci-fi to make its debut, following elementary school science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up in space with no memory of who he is and why he’s there. Through numerous flashbacks, he remembers that Earth’s sun is dying, and he is on a last-ditch effort to find a solution.

The film is already a box office success that audiences can’t seem to get enough of. It’s become Amazon MGM’s highest-grossing film ever, raking in over $400 million globally, and is holding a steady 96% Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Even in its early run, “Project Hail Mary” has already begun to generate award season buzz, with Variety saying that Gosling “is the first name worth circling on any early Oscar ballot this year.” It’s not just the acting, but the writing, the prioritization of practical effects

But what sets “Project Hail Mary” apart from other sci-fi films is its theme of radical optimism instead of severe cynicism. The Hollywood Reporter called it a “rather traditional, feel-good hero’s tale,” emphasizing how audiences want sincerity in the films they consume.

Ryland Grace is just a normal guy at the beginning, a teacher, not an astronaut. He is a person who is alone, facing impossible odds, away from Earth. But his story and motivations show that anyone can make a huge impact, despite their fears and insecurities.

Even with its stunning visuals and love of practical effects, it captivated viewers with its refreshing human-centric story. It champions the idea that humanity can come together and overcome immense challenges. It allows the viewers to feel hopeful and fulfilled about their own futures.

One of the film’s shining stars is Grace’s friendship with his alien counterpart, Rocky, whose planet is also in danger, and together they work to find a solution. “Project Hail Mary” holds friendship in such high regard, even while combating the isolation and loneliness of space; all we have is each other.

The consensus is clear. “Project Hail Mary” isn’t just good, it’s an essential viewing experience. While many sci-fi movies focus on surviving the problem instead of trying to solve it, “Project Hail Mary” lives and breathes radical optimism. Taking it one step at a time, and holding on to the good.
