For the first time since 2009, the New York Yankees made it to the World Series. Against them, the Los Angeles Dodgers secured a spot, four years after their last win. While many fans expected a so-called “subway series” with the Mets, this match-up had audiences spanning from coast to coast. Being at a New York school, fans everywhere beamed with pride and replayed “New York, New York” in their heads for days on end. Students piled into dorm rooms and bars as they nervously watched their team at bat. It was not the outcome many students wanted, but that’s not to say there weren’t great moves from both sides. Baseball is both incredibly nerve-wracking and fun—keeping you on your toes wondering if there will be four games, or seven?

For starters, #11 on the Yankees, Anthony Volpe, had a phenomenal grand slam. In game four, with the Dodgers up 3-0 and with one game left to claim the World Series, Volpe became the second shortstop ever to hit a grand slam in the World Series, helping the Yankees walk away with an unexpected win. His performance throughout the whole series was top-notch and particularly special after photos circulated of Volpe at the Yankees parade in 2009, celebrating their last World Series win as a fan. In just his second MLB season, Volpe was able to make it to the World Series and went from admiring the pinstriped players to becoming one of them.

Another outstanding player that pulled at fans’ heartstrings was Dodger’s #17, Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani signed with the MLB in 2018 and moved to America from Japan. Since then, he has won the MVP award not once, but twice, yet had never claimed a World Series ring. Ohtani has demonstrated his unique talent as a pitcher and hitter, becoming one of the most talked about MLB players in recent years. Just this September, Ohtani became the first player in history to have 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season. Even with suffering a shoulder injury in game two, Ohtani was finally able to win a very well-deserved World Series to close out his record-breaking season.

Baseball is widely recognized as “America’s sport”- it emulates a sense of pride and homeyness in many. This Series was nothing different, evoking passion, joy, sadness, and much more from players and fans everywhere. The Dodgers won the first three games of this series, setting themself up nicely to eventually become the champions. However, it should not go unnoticed that the Yankees had a fierce turnaround in game four, winning eleven to four. Game 5 had a nail-biting and shocking twist–the Yankees lost their 5-0 lead in the fifth inning when the Dodgers were able to score five runs themself, and then eventually two more in the eighth inning. So, on October 30th, the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed their seven-to-six victory in the Bronx, ending the fight between coasts. And as for the Yankees, New York fans are ready to sit and wait patiently for another try next season.
