Hailey Bieber Finally Responds to Jelena

And baby, baby, baby, oh, this is worth a read.

Many people recall their most vivid memories as walking across the stage on graduation, getting their first car, or some other crazy monumental moment… for me, that moment was when I saw that Hailey Bieber, the icon married to a man we all have a crush on (stop acting like you don’t), would be on Call Her Daddy. To say my jaw dropped from the seventh floor to the basement of my dorm is an understatement—I ordered a heart monitor on Amazon to make sure I didn’t die of excitement while listening to it (a bit exaggerated, but I should have).

I put in my AirPods and hit play on the podcast to hear Hailey, for the first time ever, address Justin Bieber’s romantic past with Selena Gomez. Throughout the podcast, Hailey closes the door on all cheating allegations and reveals how Jelena fans have affected not only her marriage but also her as an individual. In addressing the obsession fans have over the speculation that there had been some kind of crossover between Hailey and Selena’s relationship with Justin, Hailey confirms, “When him and I started hooking up, or anything of that sort, he was not in any relationship.” Hailey continues, “There are situations where you can still kind of have back and forth with someone, but even that was not the case.”

As podcast host Alex Cooper pushes for more information, Hailey gracefully moves around the topic of her husband's past relationship because she doesn’t want to be “disrespectful or like bring up something that can like stir up feelings for someone” because “we’re just all so far moved on from like any type of drama, and I’m so happy for that.” Hailey expresses how dragged out the drama feels for everyone involved, especially considering she felt there was no real drama, to begin with.

In the next segment of the podcast, Alex asks Hailey how Selena and Justin’s past relationship still affects what people are saying about her on the internet. Hailey admits, “A lot of the hate comes from like ‘oh you stole him’ and the fact that he wished he ended up with someone else.” She responds to those comments, “And that’s fine, you can wish that all you want, but it’s not the case.” Connecting to Hailey’s claim that most of the hate comes from Jelena stans who think Hailey stole Justin from Selena, Alex brings up an old incident in which one Jelena stan posted a video telling haters to comment on Hailey’s Instagram Live “announcing their allegiance with Justin’s ex.” Hailey shares with the listeners that those hurtful comments are something she’s grown numb to. She also admits the heartbreaking reality that if she were to go live right now, the same thing would occur. 

Alex then asks if Hailey has ever felt the urge to defend herself considering how much backlash she’s received throughout her marriage, to which Hailey confesses, “Yes.” Like any human facing negative comments, of course, Hailey found herself with the urge to defend herself at various times; however, Hailey knows no true peace would come from her standing up for herself. Hailey tells the listeners that after many sessions with her therapist, she has become content with the fact that she knows what truly went down and no commentary could ever result in silence. She explains, “For me, it’s not even about explaining myself, it’s about people knowing the truth because there is a truth. There is actually the truth of something that happened and the truth of what didn’t happen.”

In correlation with Hailey’s recount of what is true and what is not, she recalls a moment on the red carpet at the Met Gala when videos showed what looked like Justin telling Hailey not to cry as Jelena stans screamed at her. Hailey clarifies “It wasn’t making me cry. Although it’s a very disrespectful thing to do towards anybody, I felt like I had something in my eye. That just goes to show you how out of context things can be… when he’s like trying to help me.” Overall, Hailey makes it clear she’s taken a silent approach on a topic so prominent in her life because she’s not the *homewrecker* the media paints her out to be, and she shouldn’t have to prove that to anybody. 

Weeks after the release of the Call Her Daddy podcast, photographer Tyrell Hampton uploaded a photo he shot at the Academy Museum Gala to his Instagram with the caption “plot twist” showcasing Hailey and Selena posing in a photo I will frame and gift to all of my relatives during the holiday season.

The media will always have an obsession with pitting powerful women against one another, and after years of staying silent, Selena and Hailey are here to show everyone there’s enough room in this world for two icons.
