Now What?: Participating in Politics After the Election

How to stay involved even though Election *Week* is over.

by AINSLEY HOLMAN ★ NOVEMBER 11, 2020

With the results of the 2020 Presidential Election projected and subsequently declared, people have been celebrating on the streets and social media for the past few days, showing their excitement for Joe Biden becoming the 46th President of the United States. However, it is essential to remember that while this election has nearly concluded (and we can finally take a collective sigh of relief), it is not time to tap the brakes on political activism. No matter what side of the aisle you fall on, it's crucial to remember that staying active in politics remains vital. Here are four ways you can participate in politics, even though the election has concluded!

Stay informed on political matters:

In today's internet and social media-fueled news cycle, it is easy to stay up-to-date on current events and global issues. Sign up for daily email updates (we love the Skimm!) to understand what is going on inside and outside our country.

Volunteer for government officials:

This is a great way to get involved in politics and boost your resume; it's a win-win! If you're interested in a political career, this is for you. Find a local government official you feel your values align with, and reach out regarding potential internships or jobs. The best ways to do this are via LinkedIn or by calling the representative directly.

Organize/attend peaceful protests:

Even though the election has concluded, there is still a lot to get done! Many issues are still being discussed and worked on in Washington, so if there is something that speaks to you personally, get out there and protest! For example, it is imperative to remember that the fight for racial equality is nowhere near over, so continue pushing for change by peacefully protesting.

Donate to campaigns and causes you support:

Find something you're passionate about, such as climate change or reproductive rights, and dive into how you can help. Organizations could always use assistance, so donating or volunteering is a great way to help support whatever cause you find significant.

Regardless of who you supported in this election, remaining active in politics and current events is an important matter that we should all remember! Hopefully, you can employ these tips and revamp the ways you are participating in politics post-election.
