How to romanticize Syracuse this season.

by ALI ROSENBERG ★ OCTOBER 03, 2023

As a sophomore at Syracuse University, I’ve had all summer to think about how exactly to entertain myself this fall. Given that Syracuse is a small city in central New York, it’s a commonly held belief that there is nothing to do in the fall (I thought this too). But that’s not the case. Here’s my go-to guide to never getting bored as the school year kicks off…because I know we’re all tired of walking laps around Destiny USA.

Take a Trip to Beak and Skiff

Some might argue that my first suggestion is the most basic. To me, it’s a Syracuse staple. Beak and Skiff is an apple-picking orchard located about 25 minutes away from campus. Apple picking is a super fun (and aesthetically pleasing) activity that you can do with a group of friends or your fall fling. Not to mention it’s totally Instagram-worthy.

Take a Dip at Green Lakes State Park

I’m not going to lie, Green Lakes is the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. Typically a summer spot, Green Lakes in the fall is just as amazing. Some of my favorite activities to do at the state park are going on a hot girl walk, swimming with friends, and just taking in the beautiful color-changing leaves around me.

Grab a Bite at Stella’s Diner

Stella’s Diner is one of the most homey-feeling restaurants in all of Syracuse. Sitting down in Stella’s and either reading or journaling is a way you can take advantage of the local businesses and romanticize your free time this fall. Stella’s is also a great way to support small businesses– it’s owned by a mother and son from Camillus.

Do Some Shopping at the Downtown Syracuse Farmers Market

Every Tuesday throughout October, local vendors set up stalls in Clinton Square, selling fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, and crafts. This is a great way to shop small and support local businesses that are Syracuse-based! My personal favorite is Susu’s Produce because they have the freshest fruits and vegetables.

Drive Over to Skaneateles

Located on Skaneateles Lake, the idyllic town of Skaneateles is perfect for sightseeing. Think Gilmore Girls. It’s home to some of the best restaurants, boutiques, and cafes.

No matter which activity you choose, be sure to take advantage of the weather before it gets too cold and enjoy the season!
