An Outfit Rush Bible Every Freshman Needs

With sorority rush right around the corner, walking around campus as a girl is no easy task. There are so many rumors (do’s and don'ts) and so much pressure on the process. Still, no matter how cliché it sounds, there truly is a place for everyone in one of Syracuse’s 13 sororities, so don't worry if you feel that you “wont fit in anywhere.” After talking with several girls, you will quickly figure out who you click with and who you don't. There is no “right” or “wrong” answer to rush. Just be yourself and listen to your gut.

One of the main questions about sorority rush is: “What am I supposed to wear for each day?!” My general suggestion is to stand out, but not too much. It is so obvious to all the girls when someone is being fake or trying to be someone that they clearly aren’t. It’s way more appealing when you are having a genuine conversation with a girl who feels comfortable and real in their own skin. I know this tip is easier said than done, but just try your best!
The first day of rush is stressful for everyone (don't think the girls in the sororities are calm and collected!), however, confidence begins with the outfit you are wearing. Day 1 and 2 are based on the “Go Greek” concept. On these days, you will be wearing the PNM t-shirt that is given to you ahead of time. This means you only have to figure out what to wear on the bottom. BUT, this round is online this year, so no need to worry about the pants! Just wear your most comfortable PJs and call it a day. However, this means you may want to pay special attention to your hair, makeup, and accessories. Gold hoops and chains are very in right now so those are essential. Some fun and funky rings could also be a good source of conversation. As far as hair, bouncy curls or sleek straight hair make a great statement. Slight sparkles and contours for makeup can also add a subtle yet amazing touch!

Going into day 3, everyone is way more comfortable and relaxed. This is round 2, the philanthropy round, and should consist of an outfit that you would wear to a casual brunch or dinner outfit. This certainly doesn't mean sweatshirts and sweatpants (actually, keep the sweatpants because this round is virtual too!), but still nothing too fancy. You can wear a cute sweater or blouse and add some jewelry that shows off your uniqueness and creativity. Having your hair and makeup also doesn’t hurt so I recommend a casual blowout and natural makeup. It is important to look put together to show effort and care for this process. Those who look sloppy often send red flags immediately!

Round 3, which takes place the second weekend and is finally in-person, has a similar vibe to round 2 but is a bit more formal. This day of outfits is so important because it is house tours! This is when you can truly get a feel of the houses that you would fit in to. We tend to characterize this look as “business casual.” Girls often wear outfits that they would wear to a nice dinner, brunch, or business casual occasion. Think of it like an outfit that you could wear to dinner with your parents but still go out in after. This look could include a trendy blazer, a nice skirt, leather pants, or some cute boots. It’s a good idea to show up looking classy and ready for the day (and night!). But remember, it will be freezing out, so make sure you bring your winter coat!

Finally comes day 5… PREF ROUND! For this day, attire is much fancier than the first three rounds. Wear something you would show up to a cocktail party in. I suggest a nice dress or cute skirt and top! Heels are optional, especially in this weather, but they definitely add a classy look and can really make a statement. Heeled booties would also be a great replacement. This is also when you should go all out and pull out your best makeup, hair, and accessories. Feeling and looking your best will help make a tough decision a little bit easier!

As a whole, every girl has a different and unique experience with rush and that is what makes Greek life so special. It allows you to meet so many new girls and make lifelong friendships.
