Your Guide to Staying in Touch With Hometown BFFs in College

These people are your friends for life…

by SAILOR CILUZZI ★ NOVEMBER 12, 2021

Let’s face it, college friends and hometown friends are different. Your hometown friends have probably been with you since day one, and it’s weird doing life without them. They’ve been with you through thick and thin. Heartbreaks, homework, first dates… you name it, they’ve been by your side. When you guys are thousands of miles apart, it might seem like those friendships are fading. Obviously, no one is to blame, but it is hard to stay in touch when you all have busy schedules and are living completely separate lives. But, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. I have five simple suggestions to keep those friendships strong and sustainable.

#1: Visit Each Other!

Visiting each other at different colleges may be easier said than done, but it will be fun and so worth it! It’s different for everyone, you may be a two-hour bus ride or a six-hour flight away from your bestie. Regardless, I encourage you to try and visit their college campuses because it’s fun to see how your friend is doing in her new home and what her lifestyle is like at school.

#2: Plan a Trip

As we all know, spring break is only about five months away, and it is never too early to start planning your vacation! Instead of going to Florida or the Caribbean with your college friends, maybe go with your hometown friends. You haven’t been together for the whole school year, so it would be great to reconnect while tanning by the pool under the sun.

#3: Schedule a Group Facetime Call

Scheduling a time for all of your hometown friends to talk may be tricky because of the time differences and varying schedules, but try to plan ahead so you can figure out a time that works best for all of you. Send a message out to your friends and ask when they can talk next. Whether it is a short catch-up call or a long recap, I promise it’ll definitely make you feel right at home.

#4: Send Letters and Gifts

Cmon… our generation can still send handwritten letters, right? Be lame and send your BFF a letter! Ask for their addresses and write to them, it’s sweet and thoughtful. When birthdays roll around, try sending them a gift. They’ll definitely appreciate you thinking of them on their special day. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it can be something simple like a face mask or their favorite candy.

#5: Share Updates

You and your bestie are living two completely separate lives. It’s important to reach out and tell them what’s going on in your life so you stay close. It might feel weird that some of your closest friends don't know what's going on with you since they have been by your side for years. So reach out and tell them about your class crush or an embarrassing, funny story that happened to you! Sharing updates is a great way to stay connected.

Friendships require a lot of effort. You can't expect to stay close like sisters if you don't try to stay connected while at school. Hopefully, these tips helped you realize there are easy and fun ways to keep in touch with your hometown friends. When in doubt, reach out. It can be a quick, thoughtful text message or a short Facetime call. Try to send gifts and letters, and visit each other or plan a trip together!
