Summer Side Hustles

Let’s get this bread!

by MYKENNA MANIECE ★ JULY 16, 2020

With many of this summer’s internships and usual jobs canceled, we’re left searching for easy ways to make money from home to recoup from our online shopping addictions. Luckily, we at UGirl have put together five simple ways to make money from the safety of your bedroom.

Fashion flipping:

Selling old clothes has got to be one of the easiest ways to make money this summer! With apps like Poshmark, ThredUP, and Depop, it’s super easy to build your profile and start selling. Each app has its own rules regarding costs and shipping, so be sure to check out that information before deciding what platform is best for you! Bonus: you can have lots of fun taking pictures in the clothes you’re selling! So grab that old t-shirt, your favorite mirror, and live out your backyard modeling dreams!

Contact tracing:

In the age of the coronavirus, contact tracing has become a highly sought-after job. Essentially, you’re responsible for interviewing people who have tested positive for COVID-19 to find out who they’ve come into close contact with. From there, you notify those close contacts about their potential exposure to the virus, provide the locations of local testing sites, and monitor their results. This job could be a valuable experience for anyone interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. Bonus: Indeed reports the average salary of a contact tracer in the U.S. is $20.83/hour!

Freelancing:

If your website-building, resume-creating, or article-writing skills are top-notch, you should consider freelancing! It allows you to manage how many projects you have at once while building a professional portfolio and making money. To get started, offer to help a friend then post the results on social media. Spreading the word will leave you with a line of customers waiting for your expertise! If social media isn’t working for you, try checking local job sites to see if any companies are looking for talent.

Starting a YouTube channel, blog, or podcast:

You know your middle school self is dying to start a YouTube channel! With all of this free time on your hands, now is a great time to cultivate (or start) your brand! Whether you’re into vlogging, blogging, or podcasting, you can get your creative juices flowing and finally start to become the influencer of your dreams! The key to turning these hobbies into profitable side hustles is capitalizing on Google AdSense and affiliate marketing. You can watch college YouTuber Paige Kaiser break down everything you need to know about making money online here. P.S. The American University sophomore has almost 275K subscribers and is definitely a name to remember as she continues to build her channel with college vlogs, TikTok recipes, fashion hauls, and more!

Online tutoring:

Put your college education to good use by becoming a tutor! Online school has been a difficult transition for students of all ages, so getting some extra study prep would likely make many parents happy. You can start off by using your hometown connections to find students (or parents lol) looking for help or post about it on Facebook. There are also companies looking for tutors, such as Tutor.com, Chegg.com, and Student-Tutor.com. A job that keeps your mind sharp and helps others succeed? Sign us up!
