Ultimate Dorm Room Grocery List

Because sometimes the dining hall just won’t cut it

by JESSICA STERN ★ OCTOBER 7, 2019

As college students, we ALL know the struggle of being hungry, but not wanting to make the trek to the dining hall. Try living fifteen minutes from the nearest dining hall on campus and experiencing this on the daily! Walking circles around the room in search of good food gets exhausting, and happens WAY too often. Don’t worry, though! With these 10 dorm room grocery must-haves, you’ll be stocked with the best snacks on your floor.

Protein Bars

Protein bars are so easy to throw in your backpack and eat on the way to class, or even in class. There are so many different types and flavors to satisfy your sweet tooth and feel like you’re eating a chocolate bar when it’s actually a nutritious snack to fuel energy throughout the day. Lara Bars, Think Thin Bars and Quest Bars have great flavors and always fill you up.

Popcorn
SkinnyPop, Boom Chicka Pop, and Buddha Bowl are our go-to’s with this easy snack. Popcorn is such an accessible on-the-go snack, especially when they come in serving size bags. There are so many flavor options too to satisfy whatever cravings you’re feeling at the moment.

Yogurt

It’s so difficult sometimes to get a balanced breakfast before classes without waking up at the crack of dawn. Yogurt is a great way to get nutrients in the morning to wake you up and power you throughout the day. Try topping it with some granola, and you’ve got yourself a gourmet meal.

Fruit

If you’ve got yourself a mini-fridge, go ahead and LOAD IT UP. Grapes, bananas, blueberries, and bags of mini apples are so easy to store in the fridge and serve as great snacks throughout the day, or to put in your yogurt for breakfast!

Nut butter

Any type of nut butter, whether it be almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, etc. is a staple in the dorm room. Whether it’s used to dip apples, put on top of oatmeal, or eat off the spoon, it’s perfect for when you need a salty snack.

Nuts

Almonds and cashews are our go-to’s. Wegmans and Trader Joe’s are number one with the serving size bags that are so easy to put in zip-locks and store in your backpack or to throw in a drawer in your room. Perfect for eating by themselves or creating your own trail mix and adding  some sweetness.

Another easy breakfast is any instant oatmeal. Just add water, pop in the microwave, and you’re good to go! There are so many different flavors, and if you add nut butter and some fruit on top, you’re set.

Chocolate

If you say you never crave chocolate, you’re lying to yourself! Too many different types to list, but you can never go wrong with dark chocolate BarkThins with almonds.

Water

Seems pretty basic, but there have been too many times where we’ve gone back to our rooms and noticed there are no more water bottles. STOCK UP. We all know sink water isn’t what we’re desiring to drink when the room is super hot, or we’re dying of thirst, so buy some bottled water or remember to fill up your reusable ones.

Junk Food

Listen, we know being healthy is trendy nowadays, but we’re college students! And Late night snacking is our trend! Don’t be afraid to grab some Cheez-Its, microwavable mac and cheese, Doritos, candy, and more for those nights in!
