The Ultimate Jorts Style Guide

Our five favorite ways to style a pair of jean shorts.

by MADISON SHERMAN ★ AUGUST 4, 2024

A simple pair of jean shorts can be so overlooked. However, paired with the right top, accessories, and of course, shoes, ordinary jorts (short for jean shorts) can create a multitude of outfit possibilities. Now, mid-thigh or bermuda length is THE style to a denim short, speaking to “dadcore” and our current era of sporty girl fashion. Strive for that Adam Sandler inspired look (the baggier the better), and you will become the ultimate it-girl in jorts this summer. My current favorites in this length are the Agolde Parker Long Short, Levi 501 Mid Thigh Short, and Citizens of Humanity Annabelle Long Vintage Relaxed Short — all found on Revolve. Here are our UGirl picks on how to look cool in any jort this summer. Take notes, people.

Basic With a Twist

I’ll let you in on a secret. If you haven’t picked up on the fact that a plain white tank is the number one staple item in your closet this summer, here is me telling you it is. I have learned over the years that a crisp white tank can provide the basis of any good outfit, including with our friend the jort. The tank I have been wearing all summer is the TNA Homestretch Scoopneck Cami Tank found below. The first, and most simple, way to look cool in a pair of jorts this summer is by taking the easy route. Style your baggy jort with a white tank, your favorite belt, and add flare using the fun and colorful accessories already in your closet. P.S a playful sneaker is another must to add to your closet if you haven’t already.

Dress It Up

What might seem like an unusual duo, a dressy blazer and casual jean short combo is an edgy and chic choice, especially when done with an all black look. To keep up with the summer vibe, a cropped cami underneath or a light-weight top (I love the cotton tie-front top found below) won’t leave you feeling sweaty before your next outing. Try a sleek black blazer, matching black kitten heels, and black sunnies to really dress things up.

Keeping It Graphic

A graphic tee IS the outfit sometimes. Another casual way to style your jort is with a graphic tee of your choosing and sandals to go for that too cool to care look. These burnt orange Birkenstocks are my new item crush with their elegant gold buckle and unique single strip (find them on Nordstrom Anniversary Sale before it's too late). Graphic tees are timeless, and they are endless pickings; wear your band obsession or sport a corny phrase you live by. If you can rock a graphic tee, you are automatically cool. No questions asked.

Sporty vs. Girly

Jerseys are so in right now, and you don’t even need to be a sports fan to participate. Brands from LIONESS to Boys Lie have created jerseys in all colors and designs, leaving fashion go-ers who would never have considered wearing a sporty jersey in the first place to feel fashionable and on trend. Of course, sports fans can participate by wearing their team as well. Pair a jersey and baseball cap with a girly ballet flat to balance your sporty and girly sides. Finally, a girl can’t go anywhere without a purse. Duh.

Western Wins

Our final inspiration for you all is western themed, because who doesn’t like a cute cowboy boot? Western fashion is here to stay, and by far the best way to do it is with denim on denim. Go for a fresh look by embracing light wash denim with this Pistola vest and jort. Plus, to check off another trend this summer, throw on a chunky necklace covered in western themed charms.
