The Coconut Girl Aesthetic is Totally Aquamarine Meets Malibu Barbie

BRB, channeling our inner Lizzie McGuire…

Every Summer, there seems to be a new style that’s popularized through platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and VSCO. After a tough year, it seems that many young adults have become more hopeful and optimistic about the future as rules and restrictions are starting to be lifted. In turn, this has manifested into this summer’s new style: the “Coconut Girl” look. The craze first started on Tik Tok as users started creating a trend of mood boards depicting the aesthetic. The point of the look is to make you feel as if you are always on vacation, which can help you feel more uplifted. The Coconut Girl aesthetic is all about creating a chill, feel-good vibe by wearing bright, eye-catching pastels styled in a way that makes it look youthful and nostalgic. It is inspired by the early 2000s and goes along with the revived Y2K style that was also popular this year.

So, how does one achieve the “Coconut Girl” look? Well, what’s great about achieving this look is that it’s actually quite simple. A typical “Coconut Girl” will usually wear some kind of tropical or floral top paired with some pastel colored skirt or shorts. To accessorize, a knit bag can be added as well as layered beads and shell necklaces (bonus points if you use the same puka shell necklace from when you were eight years old)! Even wearing your old jewelry from Claire’s would be perfect for this look as well. Next for shoes (which is definitely my favorite part), it’s okay to be a little extra by wearing some chunky platform flip flops. They honestly just scream Lizzie McGuire, and we are here for it! If you want to go all the way, add one or two glitter tattoos in the shape of a Hibiscus flower or a dolphin anywhere you’d like to really pull the look together. Now, just take it to the beach!

That there are SO many different ways to approach this look. If you search deep in your closet, you may be able to find some of your favorite old Roxy, Delia*s, and  Billabong pieces or a cute little Hello Kitty purse that would bring even more nostalgia to your look.

This aesthetic is all about being carefree and fun and is meant to give off an overall more positive vibe. You can find inspiration for this look by scrolling through different social media platforms, especially VSCO and TikTok, or by watching any of your favorite early 2000’s movies. I recommend rewatching the classic movies BlueCrush or Aquamarine as the characters perfectly embody true “coconut girl” fashion.  Although this trend most likely is only here for the summertime, it gives us an opportunity to be more laid-back after a truly stressful year.  Surf’s up!
