The Six Biggest Hair Accessory Trends of 2020

Because if everything else in life is falling apart, at least your hair looks good, right?

by KATE WALKER ★ JULY 31, 2020

2020 has proven to be the year of hair accessories, even if the majority of it has been spent in quarantine. Styles from chic headbands and clips, all the way to bohemian scarves and pearls have been sported in every kind of hair. Here are six of the biggest hair accessory trends of this summer, and also styles to look out for as we enter the fall season!

Silk Accessories

Whether it be in the form of a bow or an 80s-inspired scrunchy, the trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere is silk! Not only does this material bring a classy and timeless touch to any outfit, but it is also beneficial to your hair! Silk is snag-free and helps your hair stay hydrated, making this trend a win-win situation.

Hair Clips

Statement clips had a huge moment in the winter/spring season. Although the ostentatious designs have carried over into the summer season, claw clips (pictured on the right) are expected to make a big impression this fall.

Bucket Hats

To some, bucket hats scream “little boy gone fishing” or even “Brad from Sigma Apple Pie.” To others, there’s nothing more stylish, yet practical, than the historic 360-degree-brimmed hat (spoiler alert: we agree with the latter). These hats have dominated the fashion world, and we’re excited to continue seeing the many versatile moments they’ll have as we enter fall.

Pearl Accessories

This gem-stone has always been a favorite of mine, and I am loving its venture into hair accessories. In 2019, pearls were often found on hair clips and barrettes. However, this year, pearls have taken on a new form (as most things have) and are now being seen woven into women’s hair. This unique and creative use of pearls is absolutely stunning and provides a touch of elegance when worn.

Scarves

This 70s-inspired hair accessory has reappeared, and as a lover of the decade myself, I could not be more excited. Hair scarfs are SO versatile, ensuring endless possibilities for a good hair day with just one piece.

Tortoiseshell Accessories

These sophisticated, multi-toned hair accessories are great because they work with all hair colors. In 2019 and the beginning of 2020, this print took its form in hair clips, elevating any outfit into a clean and elegant look. Although tortoiseshell clips are still being sported today, tortoiseshell headbands (Blair Waldorf vibes!) will be stealing the spotlight this fall.

Hair accessories have undergone a major upgrade within the past year, and we love to see it! Popular materials and prints, such as silk, tortoiseshell, and pearls provide endless possibilities to get creative with. Hair clips and bucket hats had a huge moment in 2019, and as we progress into fall 2020, they too are experiencing a major transformation. Overall, hair accessories are a great way to express your personality and elevate any outfit, even if it is just lounging around at home…
