Glossier has a new makeup brand. Who’s ready to play?
After two years, the secret is out.

Glossier appeals to us all with their minimalist and feminine aesthetic. The new brand holds nothing back. The original Glossier focuses on beautiful skin, soft touches of color and accentuating natural beauty. Two years of production later, Glossier announced their new launch, Glossier Play.
Play is a bold new take - the hotter, older sister of the original beloved Glossier. Play is a vibrant, daring, inclusive and innovative new brand. Bolder colors, finishes and products compared to the original Glossier make this new branch exciting and different.
Their campaign features male and female models of varying skin tones, which has earned the brand even more positive attention. Other mega-brands often feature the models that look similar in every campaign. Play pushes for change in the beauty industry, following the footsteps of Fenty Beauty.
Two of the best products from Play are the Niteshine Highlighter and the Vinylic Lip. Niteshine is a liquid highlighter that comes in four shades that allows for easy application with a mess-free doe foot applicator. The Vinylic Lip is a comfortable, non-sticky soft gloss, available in six easy-to-wear shades.
Though not everything is positive with the launch. Some consumers have noticed how wasteful the packaging is. Not only do products come wrapped in foil but they also come inside of a box. Glossier are trying to create an experience when opening your new product, but it seems wasteful to some consumers, especially for a brand that is targeted toward environmentally-conscious millennials. This add-on has us UGirls begging Play to pick: box or foil.
According to some reviews, the Glitter Gelee range is inconsistent. The four shades offered all vary in terms of how they apply and appear on the lids. Some shades are more opaque and cooperative than others. The Colorslide Eye Pencil has unique colors, but the formula itself is not as user-friendly as it suggests. It does have a tug to it and requires building up for full-color payoff.
We suggest you try either the Creme Gel Liner from Colourpop or the Highliner Gel Eye Crayon by Marc Jacobs, both much higher quality and in a wide variety of shades. Instead of the lackluster Glitter Gelee by Play try Spacejam Ultra Luxe Glitter Balm by Lemonhead LA. It offers the same chunky glitter effect but in more wild shades.
Despite some critiques, this brand is still a hit in our books. Play is the opposite of the original minimalist Glossier brand, and it was intended to be that way (not everyone is interested in glitter lids and mustard-yellow eyeliner, anyway). Play still has standout products and an amazing story with their new brand. It will be interesting to see where their next step is after this initial launch.
Whatever it is, we are so ready to Play.
