HBO’s Euphoria Sparks a NYFW Makeup Movement
Shifting the runway from monochrome to Technicolor.

Sparkling glitter tears, Swarovski-crystal covered eyebrows and tie-dye rainbow lids are some of the unconventional, yet eye-catching makeup looks that stole the show on the runway at this year’s New York Fashion Week.
Prominent fashion designers, such as Oscar de la Renta, Cynthia Rowley and Marc Jacobs showcased models sporting bold and daring makeup looks, especially on the eyes.
In previous years, minimal makeup reigned supreme. Some brands, like Olay and Anna Sui, even promoted “makeup-free” models on their catwalks. Such dramatic make-up has been missing from editorial looks too, with make-up artists sticking to the popular “no-makeup” makeup looks.
NYFW’s stark transition from bare faces and natural looks to colored eyeshadow and glitter galore can be partially attributed to HBO’s breakout show Euphoria.
Since the series’ premiere in mid-June, Euphoria-inspired makeup has taken over the beauty world on platforms like Instagram and YouTube. The hashtag “#euphoriamakeup” has over 20,000 posts on Instagram. Step-by-step makeup tutorials have dominated the YouTube beauty community, with some videos racking up over 400,000 thousand views.
A particular makeup look that has taken off on social media is the use of gemstones as eyeliner or as accents around eyeshadow. This star-studded look was super popular on Alexa Demie’s character, Maddy Perez.
One makeup artist, Anita Katalina (@anitakartistry), tried her hand this Euphoria look, complete with neon blue eyeshadow and crystals all around the eyes.
The look was created by Euphoria’s head makeup artist Doniella Davy, whose Instagram (@donni.davy) is chock-full of dreamy, ethereal make-up looks. HBO’s fresh and controversial teen drama exhibits makeup looks straight out of a fantasy with its rich colors and eye-catching sparkles. The show has catapulted new trends, like face glitter, into mainstream beauty culture, as seen at NYFW.
During New York Fashion Week, makeup designs reminiscent of Euphoria have appeared on the faces of models walking the runway for Marc Jacobs, Laurence & Chico, Pyer Moss and more, and it has not gone unnoticed. In an interview with Refinery29, Davy said it is “exciting to see these looks in full force on the runway.”
“It’s equally as exciting to see them on regular people in the real world,” expressed Davy.
We hope these dazzling makeup trends will continue to grace the runways (and social media) for a while. We love this transition into experimenting with different makeup and textures, and are so here for makeup artists pushing the boundaries with these dynamic beauty trends!
