Alabama Rush TikTok is Lowkey Genius

Why can’t we stop watching?

by TAYLOR CHAIKEN ★ AUGUST 14, 2021

If you don’t live under a rock, you know that Alabama Sorority Rush has taken over TikTok. From outfits of the day, dance trends, and even recruitment snippets we’ve literally seen it all. What may seem like a silly or obnoxious trend that many have mocked, it’s actually a genius tactic and marketing technique for sororities participating in the madness. These 60-second videos are actually a free advertisement giving PNMs a taste of what each house has to offer...and they’re nothing if not wildly entertaining. Do we think other universities will copy this approach? Only time will tell.

3 ways Alabama Has Been Low-Key Genius on TikTok

  1. Gaining Attention

Regardless of what you think of #Bamarush, we can all say with absolute certainty that it has caught our eye. We’ve all seen it, heard it, or secretly wish we were partaking in it. Whether used as encouraging students to go Greek, join a specific chapter, or attend the University of Alabama in general, it has certainly been working as it has gained national attention. After all, it is extremely intriguing. Literally praying our girlies get their top houses. Viral videos of sorority members dancing to popular songs have been used to lure people in and want to participate. I’ve even come across multiple videos of people with polar opposite lifestyles wishing that they could experience Alabama sorority life, as it looks so appealing from the videos. Clearly, something is working.

  2. The Ultimate House Tours

Alabama rush is in person this year unless the participant chooses to go virtual. With room tours and videos being made in the house, PNMs can get a close perception of what living in the house is actually like. This visual component is so beneficial in choosing what houses the individual may like best or want to live in, that they may lack when actually rushing. Also, these houses?! Insane. Who wouldn’t want to live there? TikTok is so advantageous in the whole visual aspect itself for recruitment.

  3. A Real, Honest Approach

The initial appeal of TikTok is that people post videos displaying transparency of their honest lives and real, yet relatable problems (for the most part). There is a reason why everyday people get huge, while already popular stars do not take up all the “hype” on the platform. People crave authenticity, and TikTok delivers that without embellishments or concealing. If an individual LOVES or feels strongly about their sorority, that can be revealed and shown through TikTok. After all, the platform is one of the easiest ways on social media to deliver a message to an audience. If they feel the other way around, they may express that as well (as long as the house allows it). The genuineness of TikTok will help PNMs navigate which houses they like best, as they are lucky enough to get the “inside scoop” from the app.

While social media mediums are the leading way to influence or spread information to teenagers, Tiktok definitely takes the cake. Not only is Tiktok so profitable for advertising and influencing, it is also free of cost and downright easy. If anyone can see it and use it, why not take advantage of it? Not only is Alabama paving the way for advertising sorority recruitment at other universities, but overall advertising in general. It’s crazy the amount of power social media holds. On that note, enjoy the craziness of Alabama sorority rush on TikTok...it only happens once a year!
