Cold weather is your worst beauty enemy. Your lips can be especially sensitive to the brisk winter air, leading to flaky and chapped lips, and applying lipstick can be a messy nightmare. But that doesn't mean you have to put your lipstick and lip gloss collection away for the winter. Keep your lips luscious this season with some quick and easy tips.

Before applying lipstick:

1. Exfoliate.

Lip exfoliants are a necessity for the upcoming Syracuse winter. LUSH Handmade Cosmetics makes cute, little tubs of lip scrubs in tons of delicious flavors. Not only do they remove all the dead skin, but they’re also safe to consume, so they taste great. Don’t go and eat the whole pot, but licking your lips won't kill you. If you don’t want to buy an exfoliator, it is super simple to create one from scratch. Simply mix sugar with honey or coconut oil, and store it in a closed container.

2. Moisturize using quality lip products.

After exfoliating, moisturizing is key. Although your favorite watermelon chapstick may smell and taste great, chances are it is not helping your lips stay moisturized. Try to stay away from lip balms with fragrances, and choose brands that are proven to work effectively like Blistex, Nivea, Vaseline, and Burt’s Bees. They are available at almost any drugstore.

3. (Optional) Use a lip mask.

If your dry lips need a little extra TLC after exfoliating, try applying a 15-minute leave-on lip mask. Don't have time? You can start the rest of your makeup routine while the mask works its magic. Sephora sells $3 lip masks, such as the rose and shea ones below, to offer extra moisture.

4. (Optional) Use a lip primer.

After moisturizing, apply a lip primer to ensure smooth lipstick application. Try this option from Too Faced; it’s super hydrating and keeps your lipstick from feathering or fading.

5. After following these steps, you can go ahead and apply your desired lipstick or lip gloss to complete your look.

Matte lipstick can be especially drying to lips in general and can be difficult to apply to lips that are not properly hydrated. Lipstick, especially matte ones, can emphasizes your every wrinkle.

It is important to follow these steps regularly during the winter to keep your lips looking healthy. Follow these tips to keep your pucker looking smooth and hydrated on all occasions. Every UGirl knows that when you look your best, you feel your best.
