Real Life vs. Highlight Reel

Why what you see online isn’t always the full story.

Ever scroll through Instagram and feel like everyone else’s life is basically a movie while yours is just… not? Girl, we’ve all been there. Social media can be misleading if you start comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel. But here’s the thing: what you see online is usually the best moments, carefully edited and filtered, not the full story.

So how does this affect mental health? Constant scrolling and comparison can increase feelings of anxiety, stress and low self-esteem. Seeing friends on vacations, getting awards or just living their “perfect” lives can make you feel like you’re falling behind. Now, I’m not saying social media is all bad. It can also be a space to share your creativity, connect with people and even inspire others. The key is how you use it.

Set Boundaries and Protect Your Mental Health

Here’s the secret: you don’t have to quit social media to keep your sanity. Try these tips:

  1. Take intentional breaks – Step away for an hour and go do something that makes you feel good (pun intended). You’d be surprised how refreshing it is.

  2. Curate your feed – Follow accounts that make you feel good, not stressed. Unfollow or mute accounts that you just aren’t feeling.

  3. Be mindful while scrolling – Notice how posts make you feel. If something sparks comparison or jealousy, scroll past or remind yourself it’s just a highlight reel.

When used intentionally, social media can be inspiring. It’s where trends start, connections are made, and people showcase their talents. You just need to engage on your terms.

Why This Matters Now

College students spend a huge chunk of their day on their phones, whether it’s for classes, clubs or just catching up on their favorite TikTok influencers. Feeling stressed or insecure can happen fast if we forget that social media isn’t real life. Learning to separate your feed from reality helps you enjoy the creative and social perks of these platforms without letting them control your mood.

The goal is simple: enjoy the fun, skip the stress, and remember that your life doesn’t need to look like someone else’s TikTok or Instagram story. Social media should leave you feeling good, not bring you down. So next time you’re scrolling, take a breath, set some boundaries and embrace the real stuff (highlight reel optional).
