We've all heard of the "Freshman 15," but no one really warns you about the unofficial workout of walking thousands of steps and climbing what feels like hundreds of stairs every day. Whether you live at the top of the Mount, at the bottom of campus, or a bus ride away on South Campus, your daily walk to class can feel less like a casual stroll and more like a full-on hike.
So, how can we turn our daily campus hike into something we actually look forward to? I've found that the perfect playlist, a feel-good outfit, and even the weather can completely change the vibe of your walk. By making these small details work for you, the walk you once dreaded can become a little more exciting. You may not be able to avoid the stairs, but you can make the climb feel a little more iconic.
Music
There's always been something about music that can instantly make any ordinary moment feel cinematic. Try listening to Olivia Dean or Clairo for a calm, early-morning playlist, an upbeat mix of Harry Styles and Bruno Mars while climbing the stairs, or even RAYE or Tyler, the Creator for a confidence boost before heading to an exam. Choosing the right music can shape your mood before you even step outside.
Outfit
Picking an outfit that makes you feel good can make a regular day feel more intentional. Even if your walk only involves stopping at lecture halls or taking a trip to the dining hall, wearing something you like can significantly improve your mood. While we're embracing the fall months, a cute jacket, a pair of boots, and some accessories can go a long way.
But this doesn't mean sacrificing comfort. Don't be afraid to wear those trusty sneakers or comfy clothes. The goal isn't to impress everyone; it's to make you feel like your own main character.
Weather
Although you can't control the weather, it can still help create an improved atmosphere. Syracuse is currently experiencing crisp fall mornings that will hopefully soon bring the bright oranges and reds of the season. The cold winter months bring fresh snow that can completely transform campus, and even rainy days can feel cozy with an umbrella and a warm drink. Of course, dressing for the Syracuse winter is important, but learning to notice the scenery and nature around you can make every walk feel seasonal and new.
At the end of the day, the stairs, long walks, and unpredictable Syracuse weather aren't going anywhere. However, the way you experience these walks is up to you. So, put on your headphones, wear something you like, and enjoy the walk. Sometimes, making the simple moments of college feel special begins with slowing down and enjoying the journey.
