The Ultimate Guide to Summer Skincare

Let your skin glow!

The change of seasons is always hard on our skin. Sometimes we need to spice up our routines to face the challenges of the summer. Between excessive exposure to sunlight, heat, dehydration, saltwater, and humidity, our skin can become seriously damaged. That’s why it is vital to maintain a suitable skincare routine during summer. These tips will help you enjoy the summer days while keeping your skin healthy!

Sun protection:

Sunscreen is the most important product you need to apply before going outside. In fact, solar radiation is one of the main causes of premature skin aging. Don’t neglect sun protection, even on cloudier days as the UV rays are equally as powerful! Choose products with a protection factor of at least 25 SPF. The stronger the better! This will help protect your skin from UV damage, which causes wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven skin tone, and even skin cancer. Another advantage of using sunscreen is that you can apply it underneath makeup. Also, some foundation creams already include SPF protection in them. If you are spending a large amount of time in the sun, don’t forget to reapply sunscreen to your skin a couple of times during the day. Neutrogena and Clinique have great sun protection products! Check them out for some cheap recommendations.

Cleansing:

Washing your face solely with water during the summer is not enough. The heat propels the accumulation of sweat, dust, and dirt on your skin, calling for a more thorough facial cleansing.  First, make sure you remove your makeup with micellar water. Next, use a face wash that is suitable for your skin type to remove the excess oil from your pores; however, limit the number of times you wash your face to twice a day so that you don’t unintentionally dry out your skin. Having greasy skin is never fun, but some natural oils can be beneficial to your complexion! After washing your face, use an alcohol-free toner to close open pores, moisturize, improve complexion, and exfoliate dead skin.

Moisturizing:

True or false: you can skip the moisturizer in the summer. False. Skin hydration is always necessary, especially in the summertime! The main problem of this season is the extensive heat, which dehydrates the body and dries out the skin. Dry skin is prone to excessive damage, so you need to regularly hydrate it with creams and serums to compensate for moisture loss. If you don't properly moisturize, your face will begin to over-produce oils which will cause break-outs. A good moisturizer also acts as a barrier to contaminants and bacteria. Choose a water-based moisturizer containing Vitamin E and apply it to the skin at least twice a day. You can also use moisturizing masks 1-2 times a week! Some of our favorites are Mario Badescu’s Healing & Soothing Mask, Fresh Rose Face Mask, and Origins’ Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask.

Less is more:

Summer is the perfect time to reduce the number of makeup layers you apply to your skin and choose beauty products with the lightest consistency. Some of our recommendations include IT Cosmetics CC and BB Creams and Marc Jacobs Beauty Shameless Youthful-Look 24-H Foundation. In the summer, instead of thick foundation formulas that clog your pores, you should use BB or CC creams with tonal effects that also moisturize, restore, and protect from UV rays. Wearing less makeup will allow your skin to breathe, and your natural beauty will shine through!

Drink more water:

Last but certainly not least, make sure to hydrate your skin from the inside out! If your body is dehydrated, your skin will start to lose its healthy glow. Two liters of water is the average person’s minimum daily intake. In the summer this number can reach up to three or four liters! This varies from person to person depending on age, height, weight, and activity level. We recommend using the Daily Hydration Calculator to determine your individual suggested intake. Water not only purifies your skin and makes it glow, but also flushes all the toxins from your body.
