Eat Good, Feel Good: How Your Diet Can Affect Your Skin

Because those pesky little pimples are public enemy number one.

It’s no surprise that what you consume can affect your face. For example, a well-deserved Insomnia cookies binge or a late-night snack sesh may lead to unwanted visitors popping up on your face the next day. While many things can affect your skin, dermatologists have discovered that there is a strong link between diet and acne, and that certain chemicals and food combinations can lead to annoying breakouts. Here are some foods to avoid to get one step closer to flawless skin!

Ditch the dairy products:

A majority of popularly consumed dairy products, such as milk and ice cream, can cause a spike in the appearance of breakouts. Studies show that young adults who regularly consume milk or ice cream are four times more likely to suffer from acne. Also, cow’s milk is known to increase insulin, a hormone that causes skin cells to grow more quickly. So, next time you’re craving a bowl of cereal or a cold treat, reach for a dairy-free alternative containing almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk! We love Oatly’s original oat milk as a substitute!

Cut back on chocolate:

Unfortunately, excessive amounts of chocolate in your diet can affect your skin. While it’s still pretty unclear why chocolate correlates with acne growth, one study found that eating chocolate can hinder your immune system’s ability to fight acne-causing bacteria. While we aren’t suggesting you cut it out entirely (let’s be realistic), try to go for a low-sugar chocolate bar instead, such as Lakanto or ChocZero!

Go easy on of Omega-6 heavy foods:

Found in a lot of Western diets, Omega-6 is a fatty acid that can induce a chronic inflammatory state, leading to a lot of acne breakouts. Omega-6 is present in vegetable oils and grains, and can also be found in walnuts and peanuts! Make sure you are balancing Omega-6 foods with ones that are rich in Omega-3, such as seafood and eggs. Avoiding vegetable oils and taking a fish-oil supplement is another great way to soothe inflamed skin and reduce acne breakouts!

Reel back on refined grains and sugars:

Foods with high refined grains and sugars, such as bread, crackers, pasta, and desserts containing white flour, soda, certain sweeteners, and white rice, have been proven to affect your skin negatively. Studies show that those who frequently consume added sugars have a 30% greater risk of developing acne! Foods with refined grains and sugars can increase your insulin levels severely. Swap out white flour products for those made with whole wheat or brown rice flour for a healthier alternative.

While it is important to be conscious of your diet and take care of your skin and body, it is equally important to remember that moderation is key! Don’t feel the need to cut out these products completely. Also, everyone’s body is different, so what may work for you might be different for others! You can always work with a licensed dietician or dermatologist to get advice tailored to you and your skin.
