Chappell Roan is under controversy again. Roan is no stranger to this, as she is known for her taboo opinions on fans. Recently, she is under scrutiny for an interaction with soccer star Jorginho’s stepfather.
The child, who is also Jude Law’s daughter, was left in tears after smiling at Roan and walking past her table. Later, a security guard approached and started acting aggressively towards the girl and her mother. Then. Jorgino went to social media to discuss the incident, criticizing Roan for the interaction. He concluded his story by tagging her and saying, “Without your fans, you would be nothing. And to the fans, she does not deserve your affection.”
Roan denies that the security was hers. She said that she was not aware of what happened. But what does this mean for the future of fans and celebrities? Where should the line be drawn? Roan is open about her boundaries and that she is entitled to privacy. However, many people disagree, believing that celebrities know what they signed up for.
Many people shipped Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, which became a large phenomenon. In return, it severely damaged the connection between the two in real life. Taylor Swift is another big example of fans taking it too far. In 2023, when Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley got married, fans swarmed his New Jersey wedding, waiting outside.
Fans should learn to not go overboard when it comes to celebrities. As someone who used to run a fan account when I was younger, I don’t believe I was too parasocial, but I realized it was better to enjoy my favorite celebrities and media from a distance.
Celebrities deserve privacy–even if they seem ungrateful for their fans. While I do not agree with every statement Roan has made relating to fame, I believe that she deserves privacy. However, security should not become hostile towards peaceful fans.
To be a normal fan and a normal celebrity is not black and white. However, I think the best way is for celebrities, security, and fans to be aware and reasonable when it comes to responding to interactions and comments.
