An Update on the Free Britney Movement: Britney Speaks Out
...And the family is *not that innocent* after all
by JOLIE ZENNA ★ JULY 5, 2021
The Free Britney movement was started by dedicated Britney Spears fans as early as 2009, when those who followed Britney closely questioned her conservatorship. It was not until this past March along with the release of the New York Times documentary, “Framing Britney Spears,” that the movement really picked up speed and became recognized by the masses. The movement was mostly speculation from fans or those that had loose contact with Britney because those close to her always denied the accusations and she never spoke about the situation herself. Until now.
All of the accusations and speculations have come to a head with audio footage of Spears confirming everything in her testimony to the Los Angeles Superior Court judge, urging the court to end the conservatorship. What she revealed in this testimony was shocking and even worse than many avid Free Britney supporters had thought.
In the audio recording, Britney makes it clear that no one around her is innocent in this situation, and her own family is using her conservatorship to make money. In shocking and disturbing news, we learn that Britney doesn’t choose whether or not she can perform, is being prescribed drugs she is not consenting to, and does not even have control over her reproductive rights as the managers of her conservatorship will not allow her to get her IUD removed. For someone who has spent her whole life working to build a successful empire, Britney has zero control over it. She says that her own father is truly the ringleader of the *circus* that is her reality. She also says that her whole family is at fault, despite the recent messages shared by her sister Jamie Lynne Spears and her brother Bryan Spears claiming that they have nothing but love and support for their sister and want what is best for her.
So now that Spears has spoken up, we have to make sure that she is truly heard this time. For decades now, Britney has been torn apart by the media and the public has turned their back on her, labeling her as crazy and ignoring her pleas for help. Our princess of pop needs us to hear her out and show that we believe her and she is not just another pop star gone crazy. This woman has grown up in the entertainment industry--which as we all know is, well, *Toxic.*The industry has chewed her up and spit her out, but there is still time for her to come out on top and for the people responsible for the mistreatment to face consequences.
Many celebrities have already shared their support on social media and are using the Free Britney hashtag to spread the word to even more people. Even Spears’ ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, who faced backlash after “Framing Britney Spears,” was released for his negative role in Spears’ career and mental health, and Tweeted his support for her after her testimony was released to the public. The pattern of ignoring women in the entertainment industry until they break down ends now. Hello, this is a woman’s life we’re dealing with! Behind one of our favorite pop icons is a small town girl from Louisiana who was used by everyone she should have been able to trust. It is time for Britney to get her life back, and the first way we can help her achieve that is just by listening to her.
