Ways to Make the Most of your Thanksgiving Break

Relax, reset and refresh.

With Thanksgiving break up ahead, there’s no doubt you’ve been thinking about your plans for the week off from school. Whether you’re traveling, spending the holiday at home with family, or just staying at school, here are some Do’s and Don’ts to make the most of your time off!

Do: Celebrate Friendsgiving & Reconnect with Old Friends

If you’re going back home for break, there's no better time to catch up with old friends and debrief. Go out, feel nostalgic, and let yourself be back in high school for a while! My favorite thing to do is celebrate Friendsgiving, where each of my friends and I make a different food to bring. It’s the absolute best way to dress up and feel at home at the same time!

Don’t: Waste Time on Things from your Past

Going back home can bring back some pretty big feelings. But trust me, do not let yourself get roped back into drama from your past. Even if you think it may be a great idea to meet up with that ex from home, protect your peace and make the right choice. You do not want to come back to school hung up on whatever happened over break. Stay true to yourself, live in the moment, and don’t fall back into old habits.

Do: Treat Yourself to a Self-Care Day

Get your hair done, a mani-pedi, or relax and binge a new show (or Gossip Girl for the fifth time)! You want to head back to school feeling your absolute best--and that starts with the little things. Even just driving around and listening to music can do the trick. Go for a hot girl walk or do whatever else makes you feel good to refresh and recharge!

Don’t: Push All of Your Homework Until the End of Break

It’s easy to forget about your school work while you’re traveling or relaxing on break. Keep up with Blackboard and your school email. Professors will assign work — as much as it royally sucks. You’ve got this, stay on track and stay up to date.

Do: Hit Up some Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals

Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite time for one reason: it’s an excuse to go shopping for yourself and for holiday gifts. It seems like more and more stores have been skipping out on Black Friday sales in recent years, but don’t let that make you miss out on the actual good deals and hidden gems that are out there! Sephora releases their holiday sets this time of year, which are always my favorite. Have fun and let yourself splurge a little!

Don’t: Forget about Your College Friends

FaceTime, text, do whatever you need to do to stay in touch! Your school friends will be there for you the second you get back from break, and they’ll be there to cheer you up if you happen to meet up with that ex from home. It’s easy to leave behind your life at school while you’re gone, but don’t forget who’ll be waiting for you when you get back to Syracuse!

Have fun & Happy Thanksgiving!
