Five Things You Need to Survive Your First Snow in Syracuse
Stay warm while still looking cute.

Being a Syracuse student is no cheap endeavor—and I’m not talking about tuition! While we all have the opportunity to go to this amazing school, the price we have to pay is ugly weather. Dear Freshmen, if you thought the rain and wind was impossible to bear this fall, be prepared for what is coming your way this winter. But no need to fret, UGirl is here to help you survive the winter months in Syracuse. Here’s everything you’ll need to brace the cold.
Winter Coat
I know this seems like common sense, but you don’t just need any winter coat: you need a parka. Good quality winter jackets can be on the more expensive side, but you will get your money’s worth. You will be trudging through blizzards, so a long and warm coat is essential. When walking around campus on a snowy day, you’re guaranteed to see dozens of Canada Goose parkas. While they are really high quality, they can have a high price tag. Some alternative brands to check out are The North Face, L.L.Bean, and Eddie Bauer. You can also find a lot of great winter jackets at second hand stores and online thrift shops like Depop!
Boots & Warm Socks
You would be surprised by the number of times I have seen people walking around campus in sneakers in the midst of a snow storm. While you don’t necessarily need to purchase legitimate snow boots, you need footwear that is going to keep you warm and function in the snow. My personal favorite are Timberlands. These come in many different colors and give you a good amount of traction on the slippery hills and steps of Syracuse. For the fashionistas, Dr. Martens are a great option—they will keep your feet warm while still making a statement. Along with your boots, it is really nice to have warm and cozy socks underneath. I recommend thermal socks, which you can find at places like Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Hats, Hats, and More Hats
Any type of hat will work, but beanies are incredibly warm and also very fashionable so stock up on a bunch of them! You won’t have to worry about your hat clashing with the rest of your outfit. You can find cute beanies at literally any of your favorite stores or brands, such as Carhartt, Urban Outfitters, or PacSun.
Turtlenecks
Turtlenecks are making a comeback this season, which is amazing for us because they are perfect for a Syracuse winter. Not only will they step up your winter looks, but they will keep you so much warmer. Turtlenecks are a great staple piece to have in your closet. You can wear them on their own, or you can layer them under your favorite sweatshirt or sweater. You can find stylish and affordable options at H&M!
Fleece-lined Leggings
You probably already have a million pairs of leggings, but if you don’t have a pair of fleece-lined leggings, go buy some right now. These will be a total lifesaver on days that are super cold and you don’t feel like getting out of bed. They are quick and easy to throw on, incredibly comfy, and will keep you 10 times warmer than regular leggings. In addition, they are comfier and cozier than any pair of jeans. Target, PINK, and Land’s End are great places to get a pair.
In all honesty, Syracuse winter may be brutal, but you’ll survive it and maybe even have fun along the way. While we may not get cancelled classes too often, there is still plenty of time to sled down the hill in front of Crouse and have snowball fights with your friends on the weekends. So, have fun but remember to stay healthy and warm this winter season in ‘Cuse.
